The action between fielders and batsmen after a dismissal is just the continuation/ending of niggling and spite that has been thrown back and forth since the batsmen arrived at the crease. It's not like it's just that we get excited only when we get the batsmen out-we've been at it for ages.

Sledging is a skill in itself in cricket and can help win games for you.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I just get annoyed when a batsman makes a big score and the bowler acts like he's gone first ball.

:But I've never played only watched

        Hammer. Nail. Head.

THe Indians and Sri Lankans are no good at it so they want it banned.

Maybe we should say we're no good at bowling outswingers so we want them banned too.

On the other hand if the batsman has made a big score then it's a big thing mentally to get him out, especially if you've provided him with most of his runs, or if he's been in your ear through the match, which to be frank I wouldn't put past Andrew Symonds. He's shown through his own attitude towards how he conducts himself that he wouldn't mind having a word in the opposition's ear.

Makes sense. But I'm talking as a supporter who hates everything about any team that has just beaten us. There aren't many of us left for cricket as most have been looking for some "competition"

I lived through the West Indies coming out here most years in the '80s and making mincemeat of us. I watched tragic ashes campaign after tragic ashes campaign. I can remember a time when ****ing New Zealand lorded it all over us.

**** competition-it's overrated anyway-theres still scores to be settled and a ledger to balance against countryis that drubbed us season after season until we woke up to ourselves. We're the best and it's up to them to improve to match us.

That's what i like to hear. A good close match once in a while is OK but we must always win (and want to win) by as much as possible. (not a bad idea for the doggies either)

Great point R.E. the Windies. There was a time when they looked unbeatable right through the cricket world. India pantsed them in the 83 world cup and the field clawed their way back.

While this was all happening, Australia were rubbish. Enter Bobby Simpson and Allan Border, and its been an upward trend since.

Eventually someone will haul us in, and as much as I hate to say it, India look like they're a big chance. There are few nations in the cricket world who are even remotely competitive against Australia.

If they were to do all of their walking/talking onfield rather than their backroom manoevering that they seem to prefer at the moment, I think we'd fear/respect them as a cricketing nation a hell of a lot more.

Well then the country can enjoy being the underdogs and reminisce about the glory days. That's what we love in this country isn't it?

Agree about India. How awesome will their young players be when the play with Ponting and Pollock in their team (for example). Our state cricketers rarely do that.

And guys like Langer Boof ect will retire earlier to play IPL.

It was reported yesterday that the 'sledge' Symonds said to Sharma that set Sharma off was "Well bowled, Champ".

We sledged differently in our day.

You can imagine Symonds being pretty sarcastic with his remark though. The fact he called him 'champ' was hilarious to me.

I personally don't mind a bit of arrogance, but when your bowling to the worlds best side, with some of the best batsmen, don't carry on like your the man. When Tait was doing the same it really annoyed me too, I don't mind a bit of talk, confidence that sort of thing, but these guys take it too far sometimes for mine.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Sharma got him out, Symonds said "well bowled" and Sharma gave him a spray.

Sometimes it's not the Australians fault (as much as half this country would like to believe otherwise).

"Champ" is far more likely to be a term used for someone younger who has just done something very well.

To me the word has undertones of sarcasm, much like calling someone 'chief' or something like that, 'pal'. That's how a fair majority of my generation would interpret it.

There is a fantastic Canadian comedian who does a great piece on it, can't for the life of me re-call his name at the moment.

If he did, say "Well Bowled", I would've given him a spray too. When Harbhajan said "well bowled" to Brett Lee Symonds gave him a bake, and pronounced to the world that there's no room for being friendly on the cricket field.
