He had over 40 overs to build an innings. A flash fifty or a well constructed and slower century...

So he gets around 120 balls then (half of 40 overs). If he makes 70 or 80 not out (batting at 4 an over) we're happy, but 85 off 64 and out is no good?

Who said 70 off 120...... I'm not demanding him play like Bill Lawry!!

Smith, Clarke, Ponting, Gilchrist, Waughs could all play shots and score quick enough without reverse slogging 6 balls an over going for way too much stupid shot selection. He's clearly talented but after 53 matches has scored 1 century and 12 50's. I think he doesn't need excuses and justifications over throwing his wicket away, he needs to mature as a player and work out that there's more to playing in the top order for Australia than thrashing your arms around.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

No-one makes a lot of centuries batting at 5 in one-dayers. He averages 35 at a strike rate of 125, very healthy numbers for an all-rounder.

In my opinion, he played outstandingly today, took us from a horrid position to a competitive position.

Nothing wrong with disagreeing in my book. I agree with the notion he got us going today, my issue is he always throws his wicket away when he should use his talent with discipline to construct bigger innings especially when he has 40 overs ahead of him.

Here's hoping the bowlers can duck things around at the get go.

Does Stoinis get the same sledge for parity's sake?

Yes and no. If he keeps doing it for sure, and I wouldn't be doing pulling that shot out so early on debut. Smacks of a hint of arrogance, but it's hard to judge a series of ongoing mistakes off one innings.

Bad judgement sure but he was beaten by the length for a start. It was too full to do what he wanted to do with it considering where he positioned himself and half the flight of the ball suggested missing off so he decided to leave. The rest is history.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.
