I just hope we can hold on to our best players over the coming years.
If a club tries to break a contract without watertight reasons the players association would be all over them.
These contracts are weighted too heavily towards protecting the players.

Not necessarily the contracts, but definitely the players ability to move when out of contract, free agency and restricted free agency. Which inturn puts the players in a strong negotiationing position regardless of their contract status.
I shudder at the thought of the players union pushing for greater free agency rights.

I think the players' union just negotiated the pay rise for the train drivers.

It's really up to the clubs to make a stand when Player X nominates a club and ”wants to go home for family reasons”. If they won't play, sit them out. Stand tough. Until they start doing that, and accepting having a player who you know doesn't want to be there but you deal with it for the year regardless, players will hold the cards.

Which is exactly what GWS did with Cam McCarthy, and rightly so.
I can still remember the outrage in the NRL when Sonny Bill Williams walked out on a 5 year contract to play rugby in France. His interview on the Footy Show was one of the most inarticulate and garbled appearances I've ever seen from a sportsman.
