For the former, depending on the contract offer, free agency compo would be their best chance to get a pick of value.
Unrealistic to expect Cloke to rip up a lucrative contract and throw himself into the free market with the possibility of ending up anywhere. The good thing is, if he is to take the monumental decision to rip up his contract, Collingwood are likely to trade for SFA. Great result for us and Cloke comes in with substantial goodwill.

He doesn't have to end up anywhere, see DelSanto getting to North and St Kilda getting pick 25 free agency compo. If his status becomes that of an unrestricted free agent he will get to us and Collingwood may get better value than (as you say) the pick 66 the trade will net them. In theory an in round third rounder for them is pick 44 compo (22 pick better compo). Engineering a free agency situation might be helpful all round, although we won't use pick 66 anyway. But if we were interested in someone else on their list or vice versa our good will may assist us nonetheless. Was a good news story!

Good deal for all parties - win, win, win

A: Collingwood don't want him, and don't want to pay him
B: We want him but don't want to pay much for him
C: For Cloke, Beveridge and us are a great option, he gets a two year deal, and gets the chance to enjoy footy and remain relevant

            Re: Travis Cloke

Look, the only things I have against him are his kicking for goal and his lack of defensive pressure. It's heartbreaking to have a bloke squander opportunities the way he does. He would be Jayde Rawlings mark2. Demoralizing for his team mates and us supporters. He's had years yo fix up his kicking and it's proved to be as difficult as squaring the circle. He doesn't chase either. He's a one trick pony and he can't seem to master the trick - ie kick goals.

              Re: Travis Cloke

Fox Sports reporting Cloke & Dogs have agreed on 2 year deal worth not a lot money.

              From Jake Niall:

TRAVIS Cloke has come to terms with the Western Bulldogs and will join the club on a greatly reduced two-year deal, contingent on a trade.

The Dogs and Cloke’s management have agreed on a two-year contract which will see the Collingwood forward paid a fraction of this year’s $800,000 plus salary. Cloke was contracted to be paid close to $450,000 by the Magpies but the Bulldogs will extend his contract by a season while paying him significantly less than that.

The only small sticking point will be the return that Collingwood will receive for the former All-Australian. It is unlikely to cost the Bulldogs much in terms of draft value given that Collingwood have recruiting priorities and need to open up salary cap room.

Sources suggest Cloke will be traded for a draft pick outside of the second round, although there is a chance the Magpies will request a player who has been deprived of opportunities at Whitten Oval.

                Re: Travis Cloke

Being we don't have third round picks, a pick outside the second round means pick 59.

They need the points attached to their current and only pick (25) inside the first two rounds for father/sons.

I am sure a number of people thought that when we got Barry Hall; and didn't Barry prove an asset.

Barry was a beautiful kick. Cloke is the opposite.

It all depends if they have to pay some of his salary. If we can pick up the tab it will be a late pick. If they pay some of it they will want a 3rd round pick that we will need to acquire.

From what I understand Jong for Cloke is unlikely and if he goes to Collingwood it will be a different deal.

                                No way.

Cloke for a 3rd round pick, reduced salary and Collingwood free of payments.
