Re: 2018 AFL -Trade Rumours and Discussion

Heard on 5AA that Rory Lobb has apparently requested a trade back to WA. I can’t find any articles at this point conclusively stating this, but there are quite a few linking Freo to him and suggesting he is gettable.

If true you would expect West Coast to step in and go hard and it obviously it would potentially impact any interest in Roughead.

So the Giants will need ruckmen? I would hate to see Roughie in orange.
The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride.

The good news would be that there will be one less WA club going hard for English. If Freo were to get Lobb you would think interest in English won’t be quite as strong (assuming Natanui is able to get back to his best in 2020).

Why wouldn’t they? If they got Lobb they’d still need a ruckman.

Sure Lobb used to be a forward that pinch hit in the ruck, but this year his role has predominately reversed. I would assume that he would be seen primarily as a ruckmen from here on in and that would be the role Freo would get him for (I can’t see Sandilands playing beyond next year), but I guess that may not be the case.

There was some talk of Lobb going home last week. I think it all has to do with salary cap at GWS, so let's see what happens.

Agreed. Lobb is a pinch hitter in the ruck. More a key position player. They will throw everything at English in the next year or two.

Is it any wonder GWS have salary cap issues - Lobb is reportedly on over $700k a season!

I don’t think Lobb wants to be a ruckman or at least not first option. They do have Darcy who seems promising for post Sandilands.

I think you're right but it's weird because most of his best footy came as a ruckman in the back half of last year. He's like a mirror universe Tom Boyd.

                        That's what players cost...

You will find that ruckman sized players have been on $ north of $700K for > 5 years now. I am not sure why anyone would be surprised with this revelation...

Ruckman also remain in demand even after seemingly being discarded by 1, 2, or even 3 clubs...see Dawson Simpson as an example. Lobb is a 200cm tall who can take a mark up forward and help out in the ruck - and has played in the finals in each of the last 3x years...he is going to be on big $.

Tom Boyd is on more. As was Tippett. Those ruck/forward hybrids tend to get huge contracts because they are considered rare commodities.

I'm probably forgetting how good his 2016 was when he signed his contract and thinking more about his last 2 years which have been underwhelming I would have thought. Surely it's better that I don't assume to know what every player is paid or the salary cap situation at every club like some online experts do?

Also my comment wasn't purely on Lobb but on the GWS salary cap situation given they would seem to have quite a few on big coin.

+$700k wouldn't surprise me now (with an increased salary cap) or if he had changed clubs where players are invariably offered overs to move, but Lobb signed that deal 2 years ago without changing clubs. I was surprised a young tall commanded that much coin to stay at his club after 1 good season. Boyd is not really comparable given his unique situation and Tippett produced more than Lobb before changing clubs for his mega contract. I do take your point though, if you are an average AFL footballer ruck/forward would be the position of choice to earn well above your actual output.

He signed that deal off the back of taking the second most contested marks in the competition.

Very few players can play KPF and ruck to even a decent standard. I'd expect on an open market he'd cost even more.

Yup. You can get silly money and all you have to be is 7 foot tall and breathing regularly.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.
