KEY SAINT TOLD TO LOOK ELSEWHERE
St Kilda champion Nick Dal Santo says key forward Josh Bruce was told in an exit meeting that he would not be offered a contract extension despite kicking 36 goals this year. The 27-year-old has significant interest from the Western Bulldogs and Dal Santo believes a four-year offer has been tabled by the Bulldogs for the tall forward. Bruce has one year left on his contract at St Kilda, but the club is happy to move him on in order to try and bring in Bradley Hill, Zak Jones, and Paddy Ryder.
SUNS 'ASK THE QUESTION' ABOUT STAR HAWK, DOGS INTEREST NOT AS STRONG
Hawthorn wingman Isaac Smith has not been offered a contract by the Western Bulldogs, despite speculation throughout the year. Smith's manager Liam Pickering says he has spoken to the Bulldogs in recent times, but 'not once' have the Dogs raised Smith's name. The Gold Coast Suns have 'asked the question' about Smith, but Pickering says Smith wouldn't contemplate making an interstate move unless there was a three-year offer in front of him.

Seems the Saints may have initiated the Bruce thing so their trade hand may be slightly weakened.Comment

Re: Proactive Poaching
Nicky Dal is employee by the Saints as their NGA coach. You’d imagine he’d have some decent intel but not sure why he’d go public with this as it only hurts the Saints trade position. Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.Comment

Yeah this is the Saints controlling the narrative before it controls them. Not to cast doubt on the independence of former Saints player and current Saints employee Nick Dal Santo, but they're being pretty aggressive in this trade period and probably don't want it looking like any players want out.- I'm a visionary - Only here to confirm my biases -Comment

Possible to Likely Outs: Josh Bruce, Jack Steven, Blake Acres, Dan McKenzie
Possible to Likely Ins: Brad Hill, Zak Jones, Paddy Ryder
That's not a brilliant trade period. Good outs and good ins counter balance things. It's nearly break even. Unless the players wanted to go or weren't required players, as you point out.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

Out: Josh Bruce, good but not dominant key forward who may become surplus
In: Zak Jones, reliable mid/defender who brings a harder edge and some pace
Out:Jack Steven, explosive mid who has barely been match fit for two years and is getting on
In: Paddy Ryder, competent ruck forward who compliments Marshall
Out: Blake Acres, talented mid/forward who did nothing of value this year.
In: Pick in the 30's?
Out: Dan McKenzie, surplus half back that has never looked more than promising
In: Nothing of value
In: Brad Hill, AA quality winger with match winning traits and still young
Out: Pick 6
Not bad really. They get better overall imo, and Bruce is the only player of real value they lose and they seem happy enough about that.I should leave it alone but you're not rightComment

Re: Proactive Poaching
Zak Jones is a very average footballer. Hype exceeds output IMO. Reminds me of the Shermanator with regard to his poor decision making with ball in hand and his propensity for trying to do too much when he has the ball."Look at me mate. Look at me. I'm flyin'"Comment

Jones can be unreliable by foot. Quick and hard I agree.
Ryder's deal is when he's 32 & 33 years old. This isn't going to be vintage Ryder. Jack Stevens is two years younger.
McKenzie was offered and accepted a 3 year contract extension a few months back. They clearly rate him internally.
Acres is a handy player who didn't have a brilliant year. Not on his own there at St Kilda this year.
Putting their forward fate on King & Membrey, losing Bruce who compares statically to Joe Daniher, Charlie Dixon & Sam Reid (Syd).
And no presence at the pointy end of the draft, which they really need.
I think it's nearly break even, with Hill slanting things their way. But the outs aren't insignificant for them. Their ins look like an ok trade period in isolation. But I think the potential outs bring the equation back to closer to even. They were after Alex Keath, Jack Martin, Ed Langdon & Adam Tomlinson (knocked back a crazy St Kilda offer) and were passed on. If some of those were rolled into their incoming column then they would've had a very good period. But they missed them all, and overpaid for Hill and Ryder is 32yo next year.
In any event, I'm happy they are happy to push Bruce out.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment

Re: Proactive Poaching
Agree 100%. Taking the picks out, the trade is Zak Jones for Josh Bruce. It's weird that this has got to this point if you see Jones like this.Rocket Science: the epitaph for the Beveridge era - whenever it ends - reading 'Here lies a team that could beat anyone on its day, but seldom did when it mattered most'. 15/7/2023Comment
