AFL scraps priority pick
THE AFL has scrapped controversial priority draft picks, effective immediately.
The league will develop a "much stricter criteria" to help struggling clubs.
Under the priority pick system, clubs were handed extra selections at the top end of the draft for finishing with four or fewer wins in a season.
Nick Riewoldt (2000), Luke Hodge (2001), Adam Cooney (2003), Brett Deledio (2004), Marc Murphy (2005) and Dale Thomas (2005) were all recruited with priority picks.
Last year West Coast jumped up the ladder with the assistance of young forward Jack Darling, who was selected with a priority draft selection.
The system opened up the competition to talk of tanking - clubs deliberately losing matches to gain access to extra early draft picks.
The AFL has steadfastly denied tanking exists and made no mention of it in today's announcement.
