Naughts was getting slayed whilst putting up these sorts of numbers when Darcy was missing.

So, whilst they do present a danger, there's much more to stopping Adel than focusing on their 3 tall forwards.
I agree, they probably create opportunities for their other forwards but I think the concern for many supporters is more around a lack of faith in our defenders than anything else.

Good old fashioned cat and mouse game. Which system yields to combat the opposing one. They don't really have a 200cm FB so Darcy might get the double team and astro could get off the chain again. English pushing forward as well will put pressure on their 195ish defenders. I wouldn't mind the likes of Jones or buku as an extra in defence. If we have to chase the game, it gives us some flexibility to through lobby forward to give them another headache.

I wonder if libba could go to rankine...

So they are auto outs and I would be bringing in Jones for the next 2 weeks. If we dont win one of the next 2 we can then reassess on who gets a game. The next 2 weeks is the season!! win 2 we are contenders, win one we still in it. Lose 2 then its a long road back unless results in other games go our way.
The line of logic being presented here, and elsewhere above, is compelling. These next two games are our chance to make the four and it is unlikely we will do so unless we bolster our defence as best we can. So I think the changes should be:

        Out Poulter Duryea Coffield McNeil
In Davidson Harmes L Jones Cleary

To me, none of those outs I have listed did enough to warrant a game this weekend.

Do you think Coffield deserves to be dropped based on his own performances or because Jones and Cleary are better options? Because I think, for a guy that is still learning to trust his body post-injuries, he has played his role quite well and continues to improve and I think we haven't even seen his ceiling yet. He had a rough one against Sydney but his other games he has been very solid. But I would agree that I think going for a third key defender in Jones gives us more than Coffield does and Cleary has more credits in the bank with us.

To me, the elephant in the room with Coffield is his pace, or lack of it to be more accurate. It stands out when you watch him at the ground. I thought that, apart from a period in the third quarter, he was poor last week. it was scary how quickly North’s forwards could get a metre or two clear of him.

Cleary’s vulnerability is his lack of physicality. But playing Jones, Lobb & JOD means he won’t be asked to do the heavy lifting against Adelaide’s bigger bodies. He has pace, is a reasonable mark and a good kick. Together with Dale, Williams & JJ he forms a group more suited to defending the likes of Rankine & Keys.

He showed a bit more in the second half - that maybe hes gaining a bit more confidence. My main comment is that as a supporting key back to Lobb, he has to clunk his marks - pace aside, he dropped way to many grabs for my liking.

Forget about the name, and what is fair for a minute.
What do we need from that spot? What are we trying to achieve with that selection?
And then, what is that selection offering.
                Lock down tall?
                Lockdown general?
Ball user, take some heat of Dale
Intercepter? Take some heat off Lobb
                3rd up, kill the contest.

                Take Williams for example.
If you pick him in the Coffield role, we are still undersized, however, from the list above, you are gaining a lot.

Pick Jones, we are 1 user short of having Truck in, however what could JOD, Khamis, Buss do in that role defensively VS Coffield?

Cleary and Coffield are not above average at anything above, so why pick them.

2026, if Cleary puts on 4-6kg, and eliminates the turnovers, maybe you have a player.

I agree with those changes. I am hoping we find a way for Darcy spend less time in the ruck or on the bench so we give opposition teams more of a headache in our forward line. Worries me we have less to offer up forward as threats when he is not in that space.

I try and think in terms of who were our bottom 7 last week? These are the guys that you can change based on match up and form

                    bottom 7: (I think it’s a bottom 9)

                    Johannisen, Coffield, Duryea, Bramble,
                    Garcia, Vandermeer, Poulter, Hynes, McNeil

Think Vandermeer, Garcia & Hynes are ahead of McNeil at the moment, and Bramble has found some form (these next 2 weeks are huge for him)

                    so I’m left with 5:
                    Johannisen, Coffield, Duryea, Poulter, McNeil

Assume Harmes & Davidson come in for Poulter & McNeil (2 changes)

and it becomes a call on our best defensive 7 for this game. I’m not sold on either of the 3 atm (am I harsh on JJ?)

My feeling is Coffield will stay in after the comments Bevo made last week.

Beveridge mentioned Harmes is still under an illness cloud.
More of an In Bruges guy?

If Liam Jones comes in does that mean we are likely to be dropping Coffield?
I'd like to get Cleary in to match up on their mid-sized forwards because he has the pace to match them.

I like what Harmes brings to the table. He haa plenty of experience. Good set shot and can kick a clutch goal. Good snap shot. Has physicality and controlled aggression. Doesn't mind getting in the opposition's faces when required. We don't have a lot of that type of player. He is also versatile.
