We’re actually not far off in a lot of ways, the list is nearly great bar a few positions. The players coming through are really very good, and we’re not THAT far off the best.

The issue is that we just find ourselves in the position we always find us in. Our issues are the same issues we’ve always seen under Bevo. Who really has confidence in him to swallow his pride and admit that we need to significantly adapt the way we’re playing? Hes not changing the way he goes about it 11 years in so we’ll very likely find ourselves in the exact same position next year.

Fun times, what’s that now, 8 of the last 9 years we haven’t won a final in? Is this good enough? Apparently it is for the club I guess… there was a lot to enjoy this year but geez it’s hard to swallow this.
If we fail again next year, even slightly, I think the axe comes back out. Wouldn’t want to see us fulfil the contract for the sake of it and if it’s going pear shaped early, make the call early.

So I'd keep him around for another season.

We can’t just afford to pay him out — he’s here until the end of 2027 and that’s the reality. Why we jumped in and signed him so early (again) is beyond me. Look, the season itself wasn’t terrible, I’d almost give it a pass considering the rotten run of injuries we had early on. But the issue is, we keep falling short year after year and running into the same problems over and over. Maybe a fresh set of eyes and a different voice could have been the change we really need heading into 2026 and beyond.

That is a lot of list changes for a shallow draft.

Are you banking to bring in a couple of players through trade or DFA?

1 - They need to change things up, whether that is some new blood in the coaching staff, or they get together and shift it.
We extended Bevo in a season where we were gifted 11 wins, or, I think, any professional AFL coach at AFL level, or HC/Experienced Coach in the WAFL, SAFL or VFL, could have coached this team to 11 wins, even 12.
When it mattered, we were outcoached and outplayed, over and over again.

2 - Turnover of the best 26. Pray we add some defensive personnel.
Sellwood or ** needs to replace JJ, and be 30% better. Cleary needs to improve again, or be overtaken.
Dolan and Hynes, and *** need to replace McNeil and VDM and be 30% better.
*** needs to replace at least 2 of our key defenders, Lobb and JOD, compete for the 3rd tall role.

3 - Defensive running and positioning

It might end up being too many but I'm listing what I would do, I'm not yet sure what the club will do anmd we do have some trouble letting go..
I'm told we will only draft 2 or 3 players and we will target 2 trades to bring in some experienced players. Silvagni is a DFA, we might have to trade for someone like Budarick
I suspect we will also keep a spot open for the SSP plys we have to upgrade JOD. It will fill out quickly enough.

This is where I am at. I wanted Bevo gone a couple of years ago, but came around to re-signing him this year. In hindsight, I'm not so sure it was a great move. That we keep failing the same way again and again is absolutely on him. He's built this list, it's his plan, it's his execution.

Winning finals in 2/11 seasons looks absolutely terrible on paper. Of course 2016 is the stuff of legend and 2021 was 45 minutes from replication, so it's becoming increasingly odd to measure his tenure. Extreme success of which we've seldom had, but no top 4 finishes and no other finals wins in the other 9 seasons.

It ain't easy supporting this club.

Even with a shallow draft it's time to explore other options and who knows some kid may be a late developer.
We need to fine someone that can handle the bigger forwards that we get exposed on and a speedy mid which I realise will be longer term.
Just on Sellwood could he develop into a defensive mid he has good tackling technique and a sense on where to position himself.

Its hard to not agree with all of this, all of the delists have been with us a long time, we know their maximum output is well known.

This isn't a deep cut, its a catch up for things we should have done a while ago.

As bad as he was at times this year JOD took a lot of positive steps, he’s just not a full back like he’s being asked to play at times. Nor is Lobb. Both of these guys are weapons in their correct role.

it doesn’t take much - you look at our defence last year which Pratt was praised for and the stingiest in the league and what were the differences? Jones & Doc over Buss & JJ. That’s basically it.

We need a genuine full back so Lobb & JOD can play the roles they’re suited for and we need a defensively minded small, 3 extremely offensive smalls in Dale, Bramble & JJ is crazy you can only have 2 max. I do still like Buss but he’s just not ready for that and I don’t even think he will be next year to be honest, for where we’re at as a team and I don’t mind Cleary.

But ideally we need quality in these positions, so who can we go out and get? There’s a few options that I hope we look at - Starcevich, Butts, Bond to name a few. I don’t think Silvagni fits the bill but would take him as an upgrade on JOD/replacement for Lobb as long as we keep looking for the FB too.

I dunno why there’s not more interest in Starcevich, exactly what we need yes he’s a risk but sometimes you need to take risks and I think we’re in a position where we could take one. Imagine a haul of Starc, Butts & Silvagni - not unrealistic at all and would completely change our fortunes down there in one swoop, that’s the kind of thing we need to do.

                              Round 1 defence of:

                              Starc Butts Lobb
                              Dale Silvagni Bramble
                              Sellwood

This is a completely different proposition to what we’re running this year, and it would cost us what? A 2nd rounder and cash basically and we’re a serious team and a genuine contender. Just get it done

I also wanted to wait until the end of the year to extend but that wasn't realistic. We'd won like 5 on the trot when the St Kilda poaching cacophony began in the background and so we blinked.

                                I get it.

I'd still probably be OK with 2 years even now. Last chance saloon.

But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.
