    How do we value players?

The times are changing with how much money the players can be paid and the length of contracts clubs are offering.

Lets have a look at Tom De Koning vs Tim English

    Tim English

As far as I can tell we struck a contract with Tim English for somewhere around 800k per season.
He's a good ruck man/midfielder type who pushes forward and can kick a goal. At 28 he's still got a few more seasons ahead of him.,

    Tom De Koning
The Saints have weighed in with a massive offer for TDK more than twice what we will be paying English.
He's a couple of years younger, a bit more explosive but from a stats perspective he's a step behind Tim

I think we have achieved a great value with keeping English at the club and we have a good contract for both parties.
I'd slightly prefer TDK but it's a marginal difference and there is no way I would cough up more than twice the dollars to bring him over.

The Saints are being lauded for their aggressive targeting at players during this off season but at some point if they keep overpaying to attract talent it will catch up to them.

I get that sometimes you have to push things a bit harder to attract talent but you do have to keep an eye on staying within a budget and keeping a bit extra so that you can react to a changing market.

Not overpaying is important, as is knowing where the value is in your list. From the stats. the only area. TDK may shade Tim is in the contest. Otherwise Tim gives a team a heap more.

By sticking with your guns on contracts you may lose the odd Smith or Dunkley but you keep integrity with the players you value the most.

Quite simply, you need to cough up by prying good players out, by most likely overpaying those players away from their clubs, reports suggested that Swans and West Coast offered so much more for Naughton that what we eventually settled with for him to stay, it's the nature of the beast, doesn't make certain players a lot better given their wage for moving clubs, it's just the way it is, how do you value players? by what Clubs are prepared to pay, it also depends on where teams are in regards to development wise and still having to pay younger or lesser players more money to reach their cap, and clubs like the all-conquering Lions of the early 2000's, and paying their stars less to win Premierships.

Let's also not forget clubs can pay players less if they can strike up good Cotton On types of deals and also give family members a house on the coast for example.

Unfortunately integrity doesn't win you Premierships and Bevo needs to start realizing this and lose the "respect other clubs and oppo players" tag.

          It's the old shit tax.

Teams like the Saints pay a 25 percent shit tax on top of a Pies or Cats who have the ability to get their powerful sponsors involved to bridge that difference.

They have to take a risk sadly, I kind of hope it pays off because someone needs to break the cycle of the Hawks, Pies, Cats, Swans, Lions having a mortgage on the flag.

The value of 'integrity' is team harmony. To me team harmony was the magic ingredient of 2016. The chemistry was tangible. If the Smiths and Dunkelys are 'me..me..' it damages the vibe. Better without them. It wasn't that we had the most talented players in 2016. Though you hate to lose talent, sometimes it is the better move.

Salary cap has gone up and the market for players is also going up. Saints and North desperate will offer overs to get players. So far we have not fallen for any of that and stuck to our guns with valuing players. Bont could get $2 million easily, but has stayed loyal.

Like it G. I don't think the Saints will win a final, for the duration of TDK's contract, that's how badly they have stuffed their club.
I agree, we did good with Tim, especially the length of the contract.

Now do Leek "$750k" Aleer vs JOD.

TdK is actually reasonable compared to that deal. TdK is going to get better and is a critical position player.

I saw with my own eyes Leek Aleer get torched by Caleb Poulter. $750k a year for him is insanity.

I was thinking more on a clubs values, the likes of Hawks and Geelong will do whatever to make their clubs stronger, talking with Bailey Smith for a few years whilst a Bulldog then the coach blatantly denies ever meeting him etc, Sam Mitchell flying across the country during the season to meet up with opp players etc, Baz could be the difference with them winning a flag this season, Dunkley won a flag last year, whilst we still struggle to make the 8.

I would open up the cheque book and get Butters in. Sometimes the value of the player is not just what you pay him, but the value to the team and getting a premiership. Hello Tom Boyd.

TDK is a good player but they're paying at least 500K more than what they should be when compared to what we pay for Tim English.
then they're probably going to pay Aleer 300K more than they should and the longer than ideal contract for Silvagni, it's going to impact their list at some point.

Saints have actually been able to get free agents come to them over the years probably because of this, I get the feeling they're a little to trigger happy with the contracts they offer. I did read $850K per season over 5 for a 27yr old Silvagni. That is insanity!
