Re: AFL Game Day Round 4, 2019 - Collingwood V Western Bulldogs at the MCG
Undoubtedly Naughton and Crozier’s marking were highlights on the night. I can’t recall us having strong contested marks since the days of Grant and Foster.
Our turnovers continue to hurt us badly. Just bad lapses by foot, giving it back to the opposition when we’ve all pushed forward. I can recall numerous costly examples of this e.g Daniel, Duryea, Wallis resulting in opposition goals.
There were some line ball umpiring calls that also didn’t go our way that resulted in goals. The two line ball goal line calls that could’ve been goals to us, and then later the Crozier first hands on the ball that was paid a mark to Cox who subsequently scored.
Of course Grundy’s work was too much around the contests. I hold a view that although the net clearance effect is not as damaging it has a draining effect on our mids not getting any clear advantage time and time again. If nothing else Beveridge has been consistent (stubborn) in not acknowledging our need for an experienced ruckman whilst English is given time to develop.
Schache and Gowers were my two biggest disappointments of the evening. With the amount of inside 50s that we had we just could not convert this to scoreboard pressure. I had hoped that Schache may had turned a corner but on the last two weeks I’ve been mislead.
I’m wondering when Boyd regains enough fitness whether Schache might be tried to hold down a key defensive position. He supposedly has a tank, is a beautiful field kick and developing this side to his game will help down track. Whether he has the grit and fight for defence would be my main question.
When Boyd is ready, Boyd and Naughton as our key forward pillars, with Boyd changing ruck with English may be worth a try.
I still hold that Williams is a much better bet than Duryea, and that Lipinski deserves a place for Gowers.
Makes for a subdued start to the weekend to go down to Collingwood on a Friday night.Comment

Thought he was poor at best. Very ordinary in the contest, slow, falls over at critical times and only average by foot. I understand that we have a young group hence why he is brought in but lets be honest there are some very ordinary premiership players out there. Bailey Williams in please. Our club was born in blood and boots, not in AFL focus groups.Comment

Thoughts on Cordy? To be honest I barely noticed him - and I don't think that's a positive. Our club was born in blood and boots, not in AFL focus groups.Comment

Re: AFL Game Day Round 4, 2019 - Collingwood V Western Bulldogs at the MCG
Last night had an issue in the crowd for the first time in a long while.
We have reserved seats at Marvel Stadium (same seats on the bottom deck since we moved there) and are also AFL members. So most of the games we are surrounded by Bulldog supporters and the same people for a long, long time.
Sitting in the AFL members last night. I was at the football with my Day (70) and my son (12). The people behind us were swearing. Not occasionally. Consistently and most of it was pretty offensive. I have a high threshold for those type of idiots and don't want to cause any issues. However by half way through the second quarter I turned around and calmly asked them if they could stop swearing but they are free to barrack as hard as they want.
He turned around and said "If you don't like it mate, you can all go back to the soccer".
Both my parents were born in Italy but came to Australia in the early 1950s as toddlers. I used to cop that every second week growing up (and much, much worse), but never ever thought that my son would be subjected to it. I thought we had gone past that. The guy who said it was in his 30s.
My Dad got visibly upset, but get didn't create any issues. At half time I calmly turned around and told him how sad I was that I'm still copping that type of abuse and people still think in those terms. The females he was with were horrified and were telling him to pull his head in but he didn't show any remorse. You can't teach stupid.
Bloody sad just thinking about it.
Thought it had disappeared. Often at Geelong, but referencing pyramid would shut them up .
What a sad sackComment

I was referring more specifically to the turnover lapses by foot, not so much overall kicking efficiency. There’s overall efficiency ratings that can mask disposals that simply kill you with way the modern game is played.Comment

Sickening behaviour. Unfortunately last night the Pies fans around us lived up or should I say down to their well worn reputation of offensiveness.www.bulldogtragician.com A blog about being a lifelong fan of the Dogs and our quixotic attempt to replicate 1954. AND WE DID

He was never going to be able to match the reach of Mason Cox, but seemed to get done for pace/dash by him a couple of times which seemed strange to me.TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.Comment

Pre and post game was awful on this front. Blokes trying to pick fights on the train, getting aggro on the concourse. I've been involved in five altercations across 33 years of going to the footy, Collingwood involved 3/5 times. They just have this cohort in their fan base where footy is an excuse for a piss up and an opportunity to hide behind the pack mentality.Time and Tide Waits For No ManComment
