Clayton Oliver vs Marcus Bontempelli vs Ollie Wines vs Jack Steele

Demons midfielder Clayton Oliver was also awarded the AFL Coaches Association player of the year award ahead of Marcus Bontempelli and Ollie Wines who tied for second. Jack Steele came third.

Put on your objective hat and compare the fab four.

What order do you rate them in 2021 and why?

Is there another mid who should gave displaced one of them?

Good comparison. For me I think Clayton Oliver is looking the standout at this time of year. He was just awesome on Saturday night and clearly the front runner in current form.

However - over the course of the year is slightly different. Rounds 1-20 I thought Bont was head and shoulder above the competition - he was the next Dusty in terms of having daylight between him and the next.

I still think he is - but his awful end to the year means he likely won’t win the ultimate yard stick. For me - I think Ollie wines will win the Brownlow with a solid year of contribution until
    Round 23.

As for that top 4 - could sub out Steele w Parish or with Mitchell and on any given day have the best 4 mids.

For me the Bont is a far superior player to Oliver in every sense. The Bont imposes himself on the game and can turn things around in just a short burst. Yes Oliver gets more of the ball, and is a great inside player, but he doesn't cover the ground the Bont does.

Average metres gained: Bont 546m, Oliver 420m

Over their careers thus far Bontempelli is ahead of them all, he has a premiership medallion and plays this year with the added responsibility of the captaincy.

Oliver apparently learned how to kick between our last game and the finals. If anyone is on Bont’s level it’s him.

The way everyone talks about Oliver (and the way they didn't talk about him last year), I was surprised he'd played 122 games. But then, Bont was extraordinarily precocious and may have skewed my view.

I know Bont can't be the golden child every year in a media landscape obsessed with the new hotness, but for some reason the idea Bont may lose the Brownlow makes me feel extremely unhappy. If Wines wins it, fair cop, he's done the hard yards, but if Oliver pulls it off in his first really good year, that's deeply unjust given Bont's consistently good form over years.

Hopefully history wont repeat itself, with a Demons player having his first standout season pipping a Bulldogs Great for a well deserved Brownlow.

Re: Clayton Oliver vs Marcus Bontempelli vs Ollie Wines vs Jack Steele

Boak's had a better month than Wines.

Oliver is a bull but Bont hits the scoreboard twice as hard. I guess that is because we have so many options through the midfield that he can play forward more than Oliver. Oliver keeps going next level it's hard to seperate him and Bont at the moment.
I don't see Wines and Steele being in the same bracket as Bont and I don't think many do.
But then again, I'm an Internet poster and Bevo is a premiership coach so draw your own conclusions.

Bont is best, but Oliver is closing fast. He moves fast and has wiry strength inside. Like him a lot.

One man show in a poor team this year. He’s not as dynamic as Bont / Oliver and is perhaps more similar to Wines. Consistent and does most things well.

You could argue he's the best two-way mid in the game. High tackle numbers, adds a lot to their defensive midfield structures, good 1v1. Wines, Oliver and even Bont are far more offensively minded - they will tackle if they have a chance to get the ball, but really want to get it and either feed it out or run it forward.

Having said that, my eyes gloss over when the Saints play so might not be completely accurate.

I reckon the year Oliver made the AA side in 2018 might counts as a good one.

Making the squad in 2020 might also constitute a good effort as well.

It's my hope Bont wins it, but if the AFLCA is voting you best in the games you've played then you're probably deserving anyway.
