Game Day 2011 - R16 Western Bulldogs vs Carlton

This is the discussion thread for our Sunday twilight game against Carlton at ES.

    My predictions are:

    The Dogs by 14 points
    BOG : Adam Cooney
Daniel Giansiracusa to kick the first goal

I've picked Carlton by around 25ish

However, If the dogs back line can get something rolling then I believe the mids and fwds will do enough.
    A big 'if' though.

Running the rule over the Carton Forward line and Midfield

                  Betts - 65% disposal efficiency,11 goal assists,50 tackles,88% goal kick efficiency, 27 goals
                  Kreuzer - 70% DE , 4 GA , 16 T , 24% GKE , 2 goals
                  Walker - 71% DE , 10 GA , 37 T , 83% GKE , 36 goals
                  Houlihan - 71% DE , 4 GA , 10 T , 11% GKE , no goals
                  Waite - 64% DE , 12 GA , 22 T , 66% GKE ,27 contested marks, 16 goals
                  Garlett - 59% DE , 7 GA , 58 T , 84% GKE , 35 goals

Betts and Garlett are the small fast defensive/ offensive cornerstones , roving and crumbing the specialty, Walker has added to the mix with his ability to find space , Waite is the tall target his contested marking the linchpin to their F50 movement , Kreuzer and Houlihan are the weakest links and can be pressured into making mistakes , the use of a tight mobile defensive screen at the top of the F50 the key to stopping them finding targets , quick fast accurate ball movement the key to breaking the press on the rebound, the use of Griffen dropping back as the extra man will be key

                  Gibbs - 76% disposal efficiency, 226 kicks , 96 handballs , 45 tackles , 103 marks, 9 contested marks , 49 rebound 50,s , 9 goal assist
                  Judd - 67% DE , 173 K , 198 HB , 90 T , 38 M , 2 CM , 62 inside 50,s , 20 GA
                  Simpson - 70% DE , 198 K , 93 HB , 54 T ,73 M , 3 CM , 69 I 50,s , 13 GA
                  Murphy - 73% DE , 230 K , 174 HB , 68 T , 66 M , 1 CM , 59 I 50,s ,10 GA
                  Robinson - 68% DE , 179 K , 111 HB ,50 T, 41 clangers , 75 M ,8 CM , 58 I 50,s , 5 GA

The most obvious point is their ability to break laterally to find space . Gibbs drops back as the extra man and finds space his rebound 50,s a key to their switch of play , Ward is the best man on man matchup to shut him down . Judd is the stat monster, his enormous workrate tight in the contests then working forward to create goals has to be contained Picken has to work him over like he did to Ablett , Simpson works as the 3rd link and works across the ground to create angles to get the ball forward , Murphy works as the 2nd link with Judd dangerous as he ducks his head to get free kicks he has 38 frees for tackles have to be hard and low , Robinson gets on the defensive side of the contest and is the weakest link in their midfield put pressure on him and he makes mistakes

Tough game but we can break their two level press ( 1st level Betts , Garlett and Walker I 50) ( 2nd level Judd, Simpson, Murphy top of the 50 ) by quick accurate ball movement , players will have to work hard to create space to provide targets , any delays in decision making will give them too much time to block/ cover spaces ,we have to stay with our zones and not have players pulled in close to the contest , we have to finish the 1ST quarter very strongly to break up any momentum they might be trying build , the same with the start of the 3RD come out hard and shut down their lateral movement and hurt them on the scoreboard

Late withdrawal: AndrewP6. Hit with the Delhi Belly as I was about to leave for the train station Don't actually feel unwell, which makes it even worse. Didn't want to take the risk of getting there and being crook. NOT HAPPY. With my luck, they'll have a cracker of a game in my absence.

Managed to get free tickets to like the extreme premium medallion club seats in row A. Can't wait, they should be the best seats i've ever had to a game.

                              Sadly i think they win

edit: Hill is out sub, fairly sensible, however i'm surprised at Carlton's moves. AJ for Carazzo, no injury mentioned. AJ was their primary tagger but has barely played this year. And Russell as the sub? surprising to say the least. First time he's been in that role i believe
