Exactly but if someone bids a 2nd rounder we can take him in the 3rd and pay the points we owe next year because it won't be much. If he doesn't attract an earlier bid we can get him with our last pick.

So I have done a bit of google research on the new points system. What I gather is that after the first round, there is a 197 point disc out for father/son and academy players. So...

Our last pick is at 51 which = 259 points. This would mean we afford 452 points for Darcy. Pick 39 = 446 points.

Just wondering what happens what you owe/have points leftover. How long do you have to pay back or keep points?

Yes, there is a 15% discount applied to father son selections and if necessary you can carry points over to the following season. It has to be paid the following season.

The points you owe come off the picks you have that fall after the pick that was bid. If pick 45 is bid, that's 347 points. Subtract 197 and we need 150 points. Our next pick, pick 51, is worth 259, so the 150 is subtracted from the 159 to leave 109. That's equivalent to pick 64 so pick 51 moves back to pick 64 for us to pay for McPherson

If all the picks you have left after the pick that was bid added together aren't enough to pay for the player, you owe the remaining points the next year

Dogs pass on nominating father-son prospect Darcy MacPherson

HE WESTERN Bulldogs have elected not to nominate Darcy MacPherson as a father-son prospect ahead of next month's NAB AFL Draft, but will consider the teenager on the night if he is still available at the right choice.

MacPherson, whose dad Stephen played 188 games for the club between 1982-95, has been a member of the Bulldogs' father-son program in recent years and played three games for Footscray's VFL side this season.

But the club has informed the 177cm midfielder they won't nominate him under the father-son rules, which would have given the Dogs the option to match a bid if it comes on draft night on November 24.

They can still draft the 17-year-old, but he will be in the open draft pool and considered against the rest of the players up for grabs.

Under the new live bidding system there is less certainty about where clubs' nominated father-son prospects will end up, given they have to wait until the night to see where a bid falls.

The club will take four picks to the national draft – No.20, 21, 30 and 51.

The Dogs will also keep their options open in the rookie draft, where they won't nominate MacPherson as a father-son rookie if he falls through the national draft without a club.

MacPherson overcame injury concerns to be one of the standout players at this month's NAB AFL Draft Combine. He placed among the top-10 of the running vertical jump, agility, beep test, clean hands and kicking tests.

The first AFL deadline for father-son nominations closes on Friday. Clubs have a second deadline in late November days before the draft where the nominated group of father-sons must be finalised.

It's a bitter pill to swallow for the player but I think it's the right decision.

So not even a rookie selection? Can't we nominate him and if no one bids we take him as a rookie. Not sure how this all works now? Essendon took Long last year like that didn't they?

I thought the selling of our pick 11 to get 20&21 was to ensure we had enough points to nominate Darcy ... Now I"m really confused.

I think we lost points in that deal.

That trade never had anything to do with Darcy. If we had nominated him and he attracted a bid there is no way it would have been that high.

                              Nope, pick 11 = 1329 points.
                              Pick 20 = 912 + pick 21 = 878, so a total of 1790 and a 461 point gain.

Although the points were never relevant for this deal anyway.

No we weren't trying to acquire points for McPherson in that deal pick 11 for picks 20 and 21. We just wanted to strengthen our picks in the earlier part of the draft. It's more likely that deal going though had us rethinking taking McPherson.

I think our list imbalance of too many smaller players was probably a strong consideration in us not nominating him.
