Do we need more star players?

This 2015 draft appears to be an unpredictable one especially around our picks.
I think most of us would agree that we have a couple of gaps with our key position players but I wonder if despite our list needing a couple of KPP if the likes of Rioli or Ah Chee, who seem to have a significant upside, were available with our first 2 picks if we should consider one of them or even both at picks 24 and/or 25?

I guess it could depend on if the likes of Ben McKay were still available but it's going to be one of the challenges Dalrymple faces on draft day.

    Interested in your thoughts.

We'll go best available with the first pick (or two) for sure, perhaps 30 and 51 we may weight more heavily towards talls as we obviously have a need.

The list management staff may have also recognised a rebounding running defender which could sway thinking

That's the way I think we should approach it.

I think we are a year needing a cherry on the top type/s. But if Dalrymple thinks Rioli or Ah Chee should go on the list when it's our pick then I'm not going to argue. We can always use more pace and good ball users and forward pressure.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Best available for our early picks for sure. I'm hoping for more utility types who could rotate through the midfield and half back as I think we have enough forwards-midfielders including a few who we haven't seen a huge amount of in 2015, in Hrovat and Hamilton, along with the balance of our 2014 draft class (outside of Cordy).
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Fair call - but is McLean a "cherry on top" player? Daniel? Dale?
I think we actually have plenty of icing type players on the list - maybe one more freak will be enough (Rioli?)

              Agreed.

One more star and we're set. Our list has never looked better.

Given we traded 11 for 20/21 makes me think we may use 21 to snare a special needs type who other clubs may be interested in. I'd be happy with 20 on best available and 21 on a ready to go special needs.

Daniel will be more instrinsic to the team I think. McLean and Dale I agree but Daniel will be the type of player who changes the direction of games.

Re: Do we need more star players?

The way I see it, we now have a list full of really good medium and smaller sized players. I'd rather the club went for a few taller players, KPB types and one or two bigger bodied utility types. But I have no insight into who in the draft will fit this bill and how likely they are to be available at the picks we would like to select them at. I note that we have 3 rookie spots and that these could be used to test potential KPB's, especially those "mature-agers" from the state leagues. I don't think we need to worry about the ruck situation at the moment, I am confident in our primary contingent of 3 genuine ruckmen, Minson, Campbell and Roughead.

So, if the club is satisfied that it can experiment with three ready-to-go State/bush league KP players through the rookie draft and promote one or more of them next year based on 2016 performance in the VFL, it would be tempting to go for best available (ie. future stars) regardless with our 4 ND picks, particularly with Dalrymple and co.'s form in recent drafts.

At the end of 2016, we may find ourselves in a position to trade one or two surplus to needs players who have currency with other teams' lists for next year's draft.

I think we have got two definite bona fide stars (in the making) from the 2014 draft: McLean and Daniel. From what I saw, Webb and Z Cordy will definitely make it as players. Dale also looks a reasonable chance to make it. Only Hamilton is unproven from that draft.

Would be great to unearth another couple of stars from this year's draft.

Re: Do we need more star players?

I would be keen to see our first two picks used on 'best' available and if that includes a player with star material then well and good. Later picks and the Rookie Draft can be more speculative in nature but following a future needs theme (Ruck/KP)
There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist.

Dalrymple reckons that Bailey Dale will be the best pick of last year's draft. I don't know if he meant best player or the best value pick, although I would have thought Zaine Cordy in the 60s was the best value.

I honestly wouldn't discount any of the 2014 draftees to ultimately prove themselves pick of the crop. They all have shown plenty and all look to have so much physical development and upside left in them. Collectively, they look to be a real value for money group. If I were to pick which of them could go on to be 200 gamers, I wouldn't write any of them off.

If Dale goes ahead of the others, well and good.

Zaine could be anything from a dependable back flanker/back pocket to a KPB. I saw enough in his two games to know that he will make it as a defender in the AFL.
