36 touches on return? Please footy Gods let his knee hold up.

I wonder how he's feeling now it's done?

Saw Clay get a fright early in the game, a Geelong player slid into him front on and clipped his knee. Clay jumped up and went down over the top of him. A bit preppy and was toughing his knee, flexing etc. Was first for the footy t the next contest and never looked back.

Mitch took THE best hanger I have ever seen earlier in the year. There is footage of it but it doesn't do it justice. The whole crowd stood and applauded.

There was a bigger than usual crowd at Harts hotel this afternoon. I don't know if it was the footy clubs TV wasn't working or our supporters are coming out of the woodwork but it was quite a racaus mob even by Footscray pub standards. It could have turned nasty if we had lost.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Made my way to the Railway in Yarraville. Crowd went nuts when the siren went, loved it. Best day of footy for a long time: footy at Whitten Oval, Clay's return, Dogs win a classic interstate.

Glad you had a good time comrade. Yeah I was so nervous in the end today watching from the couch at home but so glad we got the win and kept fighting especially after Luke went out.

Re: Round 10 Footscray Bulldogs v Geelong

Was also at the VFL game and my thoughts below:

Clay Smith was outstanding. I had the binoculars on him at a number of contests around the ground and he was clearly the hardest working player (apologies to Jong who was a very close second)
Wil had a good game - not just in the ruck but around the ground. Ready to back up if one of Camhead goes down
A bit disappointed with Webb's game - I thought he could have worked a bit harder on his disposal efficiency as it is this attribute that will put him front and centre of the MC
I read with interest the comments around Lynch by other Woofers. I thought his delivery out of the backline when he was clear with the ball was terrific and didn't consider his efforts around contested ball situations, but am not surprised on reflection given his very slight frame. I think he will make it however.
Bailey Dale was a bit disappointing - i would have thought he would have been busting his chops to get back into the AFL but his game was only so-so
Jong was unstoppable at times and one of the main reasons for our first quarter dominance
I was keen to watch Collins this week (was a bit disappointed with our backline performance against Willy) and thought he was a bit ordinary for the first three quarters, but had a mind set change after his performance in the last when Geelong controlled the ball in their attacking half for most of that quarter. His efforts were reminiscent of the efforts by the AFL backline group.
Cordy did a few nice things - likely to be better for the run
Boyd pulled his weight in the ruck, but not very effective when resting forward, however the ball delivery into the front half after quarter time was VERY ordinary by the VFL group. Will also be better for the run.
There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist.

Re: Round 10 Footscray Bulldogs v Geelong

Yesterday was myth bucks day, so we actually started the day at the VFL game. We booked the boardroom & balcony on level 3 of the main building - really great spot for a few beers and watching the game - and a good way to start the day before heading off to the pub for the main game.

Brad Lynch was super impressive. Mitch Hannan is a gun.
It was great to see Clay back out there - and to return in that fashion was incredible.
Tom Boyd really struggled. Moved around like a glacier, not aggressive enough, had two opportunities to goal and missed both poorly. There's no case for him to be in the senior team for me.
The likes of Jong, Webb and big Minnow always go well at this level and all played hard and with purpose.

                        Yep, like Hannan, marks everything.

Can see someone taking a chance with him as a rookie.

Re: Round 10 Footscray Bulldogs v Geelong

The ‘Scray are back on the winner’s list after a narrow seven-point victory over Geelong at Victoria University Whitten Oval on Saturday morning.

While the four points keep Footscray inside the VFL top-eight, the successful return of Clay Smith would have equally brought a smile to the Bulldogs faithful’s face.

The match was Smith’s first game back since round six last season, and a return from a third ACL repair.

Fans of the ‘Scray showed their support through loud applause with each of Smith’s 36 disposals for the day, as the number 14 put on a best-on-ground performance.

His efforts impressed Coach Ashley Hansen who praised his dedication.

“I asked for everyone to inspire one another, it’s a team game and Clay’s contribution today was just outstanding for a guy that’s missed so much football,” Hansen told westernbulldogs.com.au.

“I think a lot of the credit has to our rehab staff who have prepared him really well to be able to come in and play a role for us.

“I spoke to him prior to the game about how rehab can be a lonely place but he’s not lonely anymore, he’s now with 22 mates and all we wanted was for him to able to fit in and that would be a success and he was certainly more than a success, he was a really strong contributor right to the very end.’

Footscray got off to a flying start against the tenth placed Cats, kicking three goals in the opening five minutes and going into the first break with a 25-point.

“It was a really good start. I thought our pressure around the footy allowed our defenders to control the back half of the ground and then our slick ball movement allowed for scoreboard pressure,” Hansen said

Geelong rallied after quarter time, keeping the Bulldogs to just one goal in the second term but the Footscray defence matched the challenge and kept them to just one as well, preserving a lead of 27-points at the main break.

“Certainly in the second quarter to kick 1.4 and not be able to capitalise on a really dominant inside fifty accumulation was disappointing and we tried to address that at half time,” Hansen said.

Geelong challenged in the third quarter, kicking five goals to three as the weather began to turn with showers and gusty winds building that favoured the Barkly Street end.

The final term was high pressure from both sides but the ‘Scray managed to hold on to the lead until the final siren despite a late charge from Geelong.

“The last quarter we battled to move the ball out of our back half, we were kicking into a really strong breeze that kicked up in the last quarter which made it difficult but we had the character to hold on so which was really encouraging,” Hansen said.

AFL listed key forward Tom Boyd also showed signs of growing confidence in his second game back from a shoulder injury.

“He looked good in the ruck and gave us that second ruck option that’s providing plenty of flexibility and gets him in the contest,” Hansen said.

“He’s two weeks back from injury playing in a key position in tough conditions so he’s coming along nicely.

“I’m confident he’ll continue to get better so it was another positive step forward for Tom.”

Footscray hit the road next week taking on Frankston next Saturday, June 19, 2:00pm at Frankston Oval.
