I wonder that myself comrade? Would the teams have known of a rule change like this was coming or just kept them in the dark?

It's the AFL. I'm sure clubs had no real idea until it happened.

It's totally against opening up the game also, which we keep hearing the afl wants .
If they're so worried about players getting banged into they may as well ban every marking contest.

I remember a fair bit of speculation about third man up being banned before they announced it but there was no consultation with the rest of the industry. I'm still not even sure what the problem with third man up was.
