Some commentary around AFL listed players...
Buss - usual VFL std performance. Didn't dominate, but held his own. Lots of Werribee attacks during the game, so was busy enough
Hynes - think he played better when fwd versus on the ball. Up against mature bodied defenders/mids. Had some nice touches but not a lot.
Baker - played like an angry man- not so great in the first part of the game but imposed himself as best he could in the third qtr. Came off at 3/4 time to be AFL emergency
Coffield - played a full half of footy then ran some laps. Has been in/out of rehab so good just to see him have a kick. Steady performance.
Buku - had a reasonable game - a bit like Buss, he was under a lot of pressure with the amount of ball coming into Werribee's fwd line
Poulter - started brightly with a couple of goals and then undid some hard work by players up the ground missing three very gettable shots. If he is going to play fwd, he needs to nail those goal opportunities. Worked hard all day, but as the second KF, was outsized.
L Kennedy - played midfield and HHF (resting). An incremental improvement over the last VFL game I seen him play. Think he needs to demand the ball a lot more - hopefully would have seen how Brew was doing it today.
Garcia - also played like an angry man and gave away too many free kicks in the process. Can't question his endeavour, but it all comes to nought too often. Had a good tussle with Brew who was amongst Werribee's best
L Smith - thought he applied himself well in the ruck albeit the Werribee rucks weren't imposing. Think he would be happy with his effort. Wouldn't mind seeing him improve his ball skills - a bit hit and miss at present
Gardner - as with the other backs, under a lot of pressure for most of the day. Took a turn in the ruck later in the game and I think this suited him a bit more.

NB - Croft, Scott didn't play
There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist.

Garcia really is a messy footballer - I guess we didn't learn anything today, but if we're going to play Gallagher we can't play Garcia (and vice versa)
Would have loved Croft to get a run today, shame about the injury as he wasn't far off a debut.

      Thanks for the reports everyone.

Given JOD seems to be injured, do we run with Buss, Buks or Gardner next week?

I'm going to nominate Buku only because he has more experience over Buss and more strings to his bow than Gardy. Think Williams might slide back to cover Cleary and Jones/Baker get to play one of the wing roles.

Given Collingwood went with McStay as their lone tall and then Membrey / Mihocek who are medium and Elliot, Hill, Mcreery, Schultz etc. we could probably get away with Lobb, Khamis, Williams taking the “bigger” forwards.
if we need a deep key defender to help get Lobb further up the ground though, then Gardner is probably the only option. We know Buku can’t do it and I’m not sure I’d put Buss in that position in front of 75,000 Pies supporters on the G in a Friday night.

I've been happy to play Buslinger as a long term option. I dont see Buku or Gardner as that option. So we might as well give 10 games to Buslinger, as there is never going to be a good time to throw him in. Might as well be this week. Im not expecting to win with the players out so not sure Buss is going to be the difference between winning and losing. The following week we have Mckay and Curnow to contend with so it might be worth giving him a go this week as warm up.

With Jones out, I would have thought this is the time to give him a go. This is his third year and he still hasn't debuted.

Is it at home, 4pm? I can't confirm that but will try and find out.

                    Thanks Guys.

Does anyone think it’s strange when vfl practise games are played before the afl game? Surely it’s in the interest of both clubs playing post the afl so the emergencies can be managed. Also could get more game time in the sub if they have not had much of ago.

Ah I hate this competition, round 4 next week and the back ups have played 1 competitive (if you can even call it that?) game.

If the AFL was serious about growing the game, the first step is a national reserves comp. We need to upskill the bottom of the list to accomodate 18 teams not to mention an extra one coming in, and these guys can’t even get match time?

Such a poorly run competition it boggles the mind

And no games scheduled during Gather Round. Our VFL team will have played 2 games when our Seniors will have played 5. It’s a farce.
