We do need to throw our hat in the ring for quality free agents.

At the very least we then ensure that the player costs his new/existing club some additional salary cap pressure.

Having our rivals under cap pressure also helps us.

A very good player no doubt, I just wonder if we need to spend big on another defender. We would need to move some others on.

I have no doubt he can play midfield and his running ability would be gladly welcomed in our side.

His midfield stats from the Prelim last year would say so too. Wing too.

In the guidebook thread I did last year the Chapter on Free Agency covers Williams as a player in detail. Later on how we can afford him. We should be all over him.

Yep. I would happily push Comrade off a cliff to get Williams' signature if that's what it took. I'd even throw myself off but I'm far too important.

Don't stress too much TD if it comes down to that I'll happily push you off the cliff !!! After you have sacrificed Comrade of course !!!

Just looking ahead to the draft and how me might acquire extra draft points for Jamarra.

Port might be a target to trade with. They have 3 x 2nd rounders as far as I know but no 1st. We could offer our 1st for a package of 2nd round picks to bump up our points tally. Port have been rebuilding through the draft the last couple of years so could be keen to get back into the 1st round.

There were a few options I saw last year. “Clubs with multi Rounders in 2020, so there should be some healthy competition for our First Rounder:

                    a) Adelaide (& Bulldogs) - Circa Picks (Points) Pick 26 (729) & Pick 35 (522) = 1,251 Draft Points (139 Draft Point Gain. Not enough but something to start from)

                    b) Gold Coast (& Brisbane) - Circa Picks (Points) Pick 20 (912) & Pick 34 (542) = 1,454 Draft Points (342 Draft Point Gain)

                    c) Port Adelaide (Fremantle &/or Collingwood) - Circa Picks (Points) Pick 25 (756), Pick 27 (703) & Pick 33 (563) = 1,459 or 1,319 or 1,266 Draft Points (347/207/154 Draft Point Gain)”

That’s without any other clubs trading into two second rounders later this year and looking to secure our first rounder. I think there will be a long queue to sit down with Sam Power trying to secure our first rounder (assuming we have a good year and will trade it out). The landscape looks good for us.

The AFL are considering adding additional top up players to the lists so if our resident list manager in Bulldogtragic was considering having an easy year calculting draft point scenarios for NGA players and father sons he now needs to get working on some potential names for us to consider

BT, we need your input here

I think some of our Footscray listed players could be options and the likes of Anthony Scott and Darcy Cassar could be considered by the club. Even some like Lukas Webb or Fletcher Roberts could be redrafted. Perhaps Jamaine Jones is now an option

Sam Murray and Nick Robertson could slot in quickly and Josh Deluca and Aidyn Johnson might have some appeal

Plenty of potential scenarios and even Brett Deledio could be a name some clubs target

Right now I'd think longer term. That is, target undrafted kids who were 'unlucky' to miss out last year. I'd not want to waste the opportunity to take a few shots at players who may make the grade. A lot of Essendon top ups post doping ban just clogged up their list, while they did better late in drafts. The CV will pass soon enough, I see an opportunity to acquire even more potentially AFEL quality talent. I don't see many of the players named winning us extra games with their presence. So I'd took to target the kids. Who knows, maybe a Kellett type with Footscray is train in the house down and Gia endorses them. I like the long term gamble of the short term 'small payout'. Just an initial thought.

This could be a very different scenario to what the Bombers faced and I would have thought that the focus primarily needs to be just on the 2020 season otherwise your potentially writing it off and we don't need to do that.
There is nothing to suggest yet that the club drafting the players is for anything more than for 2020 season. If it comes to it then we should be looking at a balance of players who could slot in quickly and if there is a longer term consideration then some younger players that missed out from last season.

I respect the different view points. Top up players who dominated at Footscray like a Tom Campbell, Roberts and often enough Lukas Webb were ignored by Bevo and the match committee. Recruiting a bunch of them seems I think is a bit of a waste of time, and I'm happy to back in our recruiters to take a 'free hit' at some kids. There's no right or wrong in these circumstances no I'm not giving up on 2020. If the 22nd player is say Josh Deluca or an unlucky kid, I don't think that's going to be the difference between winning or not. So I go with a kid who could surprise (ie Kyle Dunkley last year). I see an opportunity.
