    Re: 2021 Draft Strategy

The Western Bulldogs' pick 23 remains in the sights of clubs with the Dogs set to move it on due to the early bid coming for father-son prospect Sam Darcy.

Geelong, Collingwood and Sydney are among the clubs who are interested in packaging picks in the 30s to push up the order, although the Bulldogs have also been keen to secure a future selection as part of a deal.

Our pick 23 is worth 815 points and it's up for sale.

We have competition from Carlton who are offering pick 25 for the right price.

Essendon and Port Adelaide are interested in getting back into the draft and could be prospective buyers. The main interest is coming from, Collingwood, Geelong and Sydney. What have they to offer?

    1. Collingwood

    2021 picks are currently; 36, 38, 40, 46, 48, 55, 58,

If a bid on F/S Daicos comes in at pick 2 they will need 2014 points. That will eliminate their first 5 picks leaving only 55 & 58 (some adjustments may apply)

2022 picks are currently; R1, and 3 x R3 picks tied to Brisbane, Richmond and Hawthorn

    2. Geelong

    2021 picks are currently; 22, 30, 32, 34, 50

    2022 picks are currently; R1, R2, 2 x R3 picks (one tied to Hawks)

    3. Sydney

    2021 picks are currently; 16, 31, 39

2022 picks are currently; 2 x R1 picks (one tied to Melb), R2

A pick in the 30's and future 3rd round may get the deal done for our pick 23. Depends if Darcy goes at 2 or 3

The extra future pick might help us trade into the 30s this draft (after we match the Darcy bid) if there's a prospect we like.

          SECOND-ROUND FRENZY?

Clubs also expect an array of second-round picks to be traded across the two draft nights, with Geelong tipped to win the race for the Western Bulldogs’ first selection (Pick 23).

The Cats, Magpies and Swans have all flagged their interest in the pick, knowing the Bulldogs have put the selection on the table in the hope of acquiring multiple later picks to help them match an inevitably early bid on father-son gun Darcy while, possibly, gaining more capital in next year’s draft.

Multiple sources on Friday indicated to foxfooty.com.au the Cats were now most likely to gain Pick 23, given they already hold a stack of second-round selections (Picks 22, 30, 32 and 34) that can be used as part of a trade.

Does anyone think we might look hard at Corey Preston or Robbie McComb with our late picks?

Given the fragmented season and the fact we've had a closer look at them whilst they've been at Footscray it's reasonable to suggest we may.

Given we've let go of two ex-VFL players, replacing them with another two in a year where it's difficult to tell what the younger crop can do isn't the worst idea for mine.

They are two hardened bodies good at laying tackles from my viewing of vfl matches too. Like the line if thinking. Rookies?

Considering McComb’s year on year improvement, he may be worth a rookie spot - the problem would be him being a midfielder first and foremost and it is an area where we are not lacking at present. I’d hate to see him become another Hayes clone ie on the list but not getting a look in.

Preston might be a different proposition given he is more a smart small forward - we’re still to settle on options for this role IMO.

I think we do need to add to the midfield considering we've lost Lipinski and it's OK with me if they're primarily a depth player.
Preston can play a few other roles as well and is a bit more versatile than being just a forward.

I'd like us to have a look at the mature aged Clark, the midfield gun in Stagg and the tall defender in Dean but in reality they're probably all long shots for us.

I'm really convinced we need another big bodied mid.

Jong's gone and we traded Lipinski. Injuries happen - we saw what happened when we lost Treloar and Dunkley. It falls down to too few and you risk burnout (Libba and Macrae looked spent at the end of the year).

Keep thinking that it's an absolute luxury to have a good, dependable, senior guy in the VFL who you know can give you minutes in the midfield if needed, which is why I'm pretty annoyed Melbourne picked up Dunstan. That's a great move and I wish we did that.

They can still live trade though can't they? I suspect that will happen once the pick for Darcy comes in, albeit we maybe won't get as much value at the desperate eleventh hour as we could have.

Would Charlie Constable fit that bill? Granted he'd be looking for AFL minutes but an opportunity is an opportunity.

I think it's a reasonable suggestion and he will take whatever opportunities are presented to him but at a guess we are unlikely to consider him.
