I don't think over confidence or a touch of arrogance are in any ways a show stopper for teams and I suspect it's something else that might be concerning the clubs.

You have to wonder how Rendells comments on the radio will resonate with Phillipou and his manager?
They now have a chance to regroup and try and work out what he is saying that is causing some doubt in him.

Yeah - I know you didn't say it...but that seemed to be the 'tone' of the conversation. And that is the wrong tone.

If Rendell is on the money about clubs baulking at him it could either work for us if its something we can live with or fix or not trouble us in the slightest and we can leave him for someone else. There will be a number of players good enough for us.

I watched some highlights of him yesterday and the difference to Macca is that he will take his chances to kick a goal. I don't see anything wrong from him in a football sense but if clubs are sensing some problems we should respect that.

                    Re: Mattaes Phillipou

I saw a news report that had Mattaes being coached by Sam on his running technique.
Mattaes compared his playing style to a mixture of Bontempelli and Fyfe saying he tries to copy the games better players.

He's really got some buzz around him and I hope he remains in the mix for us to consider.

If anyone in this draft gives me Macrae vibes it's Tsitas.
Runs the same way in traffic and does kick the ball a bit high and loopy the way Macrae did really in his career.

                        Re: Mattaes Phillipou

I listened to the Cal Twomey and Nat Edwards summaries on AFL and they made mention of Phillipou. I've drawn the conclusion that his confidence level is a bit off putting for clubs and it's well known.

He will still go early and there are way clubs can ground him a bit if he was to getting ahead of himself.
It should be hard for us to pass over him if we was still available but if we were to pick someone like Busslinger then our supporters will be ecstatic that we have addressed a key defenders position. If it was Phillipou our supporters would rally around another father son pick arriving.

I asked someone who is involved in the Sanfl state u18 who would pick first between Phillipou or Jakob Ryan, the approx answer was that Ryan is the sure bet and you know what you will get but Phillipou has a higher ceiling which may or may not be shown at a higher level

Ha, what a legend! His hyper-self awareness as he sees it definitely comes across as a massive lack of self-awareness!

Like someone who tells you they're super empathetic and always putting others before themselves without taking a breath, rarely realise how much empathy for the listener they're lacking.......

Time will tell, but I get the feeling (albeit from a limited sample) a massive shock awaits him once he hits senior footy and realises how ridiculously hard it is.
                              TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

This is a pretty consistent message.

Everyone likes Phillipou the player (a lot). No-one really minds the confidence (I wouldn't say he's over confident - but he certainly believes in himself and is prepared to verbalise that).

There are some other elements of his behaviour that is putting clubs off. It is convenient to say it is related to 'ego' and him being 'over' confident but that isn't it.

Do I think it's a problem? Not really. But I don't know him. I think he is an exceptionally talented player and - as I have said - would draft him at pick one based on the onfield bits I have seen. But there are certainly questions and they seem to be in that 'character/behaviour' space more than anything else...and it isn't that he's done anything 'wrong'...he's just tends to do some things 'differently'...

Apologies - I'm trying to talk around things without 'SAYING IT' to try and paint a picture of what is happening...whether I have been able to do that or not, well...
What should I tell her? She's going to ask.
