Re: Round 13 - Footscray v Williamstown Saturday 17th June 2023
Can't sleep so thought I'd draft a few lines about today's Footscray game.
It was a significant win for this team. Before today Wtown were sitting fifth with 8 wins whereas we were (and still are) 14th and now with 5 wins. We were playing on their dunghill, which when the wind blows as it did today, is an added advantage for the home team.
We were ferocious in our attack on the ball and the ball carrier with the VFL midfield of Garner, Sullivan and MacPherson leading the way helped by Sweet's best game for the year.
I had binoculars on him for most of the CBs and he was literally palming the ball down his midfielders throats (53 HO, 5 tackles). He just needs to add marking the high ball to his retinue (just the one mark today and it was in the last qtr).
Croz played a great game streaming out of the backline until his injury around the 20 min mark of the third qtr (I suspect a hamstring). To that point he had already had the ball 18 times (incl 6 tackles). Bruce had a strong opening and would have got back some confidence - his marking was a standout - pity his handballing looks awkward...(he handballed it 9 times!). Cleary was his usual reliable self across half back, JOD picked up where he left off some weeks ago with his VFL form while Gardner was steady all day. Buss' game may have been affected by an injury in the third qtr and likely the reason he was moved fwd with only two players on the bench for the whole of the last qtr.
Poulter, Roarke and Gallagher played the wing roles between them until Roarke and Gallagher (hand?) were sidelined and Arty was moved to the wing. Poulter had a solid game he'd be happy with but I was worried Arty was going to go donuts again in the possession stakes after the first half playing fwd, but when moved up field, he managed to influence the game more with some great efforts particularly in the last qtr.
With three goals to his name, this was Raak's better game forward this year (I've seen him play a few games in 2022 as a defender where he also did well). His marking was a feature. He worked well with Khamis and 'Chooka' Clarke with the three players contributing 5 goals for the game.
All in all a great team win and may lay the foundation for them to push into the top 10 (VFL 7-10 positions play off for final two posns in the eight).
