    Re: Round 13 - Footscray v Williamstown Saturday 17th June 2023

Can't sleep so thought I'd draft a few lines about today's Footscray game.

It was a significant win for this team. Before today Wtown were sitting fifth with 8 wins whereas we were (and still are) 14th and now with 5 wins. We were playing on their dunghill, which when the wind blows as it did today, is an added advantage for the home team.

We were ferocious in our attack on the ball and the ball carrier with the VFL midfield of Garner, Sullivan and MacPherson leading the way helped by Sweet's best game for the year.

I had binoculars on him for most of the CBs and he was literally palming the ball down his midfielders throats (53 HO, 5 tackles). He just needs to add marking the high ball to his retinue (just the one mark today and it was in the last qtr).

Croz played a great game streaming out of the backline until his injury around the 20 min mark of the third qtr (I suspect a hamstring). To that point he had already had the ball 18 times (incl 6 tackles). Bruce had a strong opening and would have got back some confidence - his marking was a standout - pity his handballing looks awkward...(he handballed it 9 times!). Cleary was his usual reliable self across half back, JOD picked up where he left off some weeks ago with his VFL form while Gardner was steady all day. Buss' game may have been affected by an injury in the third qtr and likely the reason he was moved fwd with only two players on the bench for the whole of the last qtr.

Poulter, Roarke and Gallagher played the wing roles between them until Roarke and Gallagher (hand?) were sidelined and Arty was moved to the wing. Poulter had a solid game he'd be happy with but I was worried Arty was going to go donuts again in the possession stakes after the first half playing fwd, but when moved up field, he managed to influence the game more with some great efforts particularly in the last qtr.

With three goals to his name, this was Raak's better game forward this year (I've seen him play a few games in 2022 as a defender where he also did well). His marking was a feature. He worked well with Khamis and 'Chooka' Clarke with the three players contributing 5 goals for the game.

All in all a great team win and may lay the foundation for them to push into the top 10 (VFL 7-10 positions play off for final two posns in the eight).
There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist.

        How do people view Busslinger?

I liked what I saw early in the season with his balll use and decision making but athletically he is a real worry. His running gate reminds me of Cordy, looks very slow indeed I know he is coming from a long way back but I would have liked to have seen a little more from him.

            Excellent summary Smads.

I was at gate during Q3/4 where Gallagher left ground and when down race. His wrist and some of his fingers were bandaged. Pity as he was playing pretty well. Raak surprised me today, seems to have bloomed late. He and Khamis mark well.

Poor R.Smith can’t take a trick, not sure it was his foot/feet again though-he hobbled off with sock and shoe off-perhaps an ankle?

Agree Buss does not look quick however I think we are hoping he will end up more of a Lever type intercept player rather than a run and take them on player or a monster back man. Can’t recall him being tackled a lot & for someone young he is pretty composed. I’m still optimistic with him. Think we need some more young, developing big backmen though. Perhaps Croft or Darcy can help whilst they develop into possible forward/rucks or swing men.
            Josie :)

            Our day will come
            And we'll have everything.
            We'll share the joy
            Just like '54 again.

Considering he missed footy last year and a lot of this pre season we will need to be patient, even with his movement and athleticism.

Hopefully as he gets fitter it improves

Buss had missed a significant amount of football by the time he finally got to play a game. I would not be worried yet.

I thought Sweet had a great game and gave our mid fielders a lot of first use but it will be his marking that lets if down and this could be the main factor we run if as another ruck.
At one stage he was by himself out near the wing and down a basic mark he was sitting under and fair enough the conditions didn't help but he should had held it.
I think he gets around the ground ok and if he could clunk 70% of the balls his under (That sounds wrong some how ) I think he would get more AFL time.

At this stage it's more about positioning. Smart defenders can make the grade without pace (Sam Collins, Weitering, and premiership fullback Fletcher Roberts)

Lever is noticeably not particularly athletic either. Cutting angles and knowing when to run is very important for a defender that is not very fast.

Moved forward because of injury when we're kicking with a huge wind advantage? No offence but I don't buy it.

Gee theres a lot of doom and gloom on this forum nowadays.

Is it because some have to high an expectation for this team?
