      Re: 2024 Rolling Draft Order

I will remain consistent in not liking the risk of the trade - but it has ended up as a good result. The current pick 13 will be at least 14, probably even 15 or 16, which makes the trade look fantastic.

But there are so many variables which have fallen our way:
      - our finishing position. We ended up three games clear of 14th but it wasn't inconceivable halfway through the year that we finished that low. It was a huge risk in a very even competition.
      - Battle FA compo pick pushing it out by one
      - Kako being eligible for NGA potentially pushing out by one
      - Ashcroft, Lombard and Marshall having good enough seasons that they are potentially bid on before then, further pushing it out.

Pick 6 for last year's 13 and this year's 9 wouldn't have looked quite so good. I'm really pleased with how it has worked out.

Turned out to be a period of two distinct halves.

        Cheap mature players:

        Bramble - Free
        Coffield - Free
        Harmes - Pick 53
        McNeil - Recycled
        Doc - Recycled

        Target top kids:

There is also a mention in the latest AFL.com article that we are interested in suns pick 13 (ie the pick we gave them for Sanders).

Imagine if the price for Sanders ends up being something like pick 15 from last year, and picks 35, 43, 47 this year.

One of their academy players is due to be picked around then, so it makes sense for them to trade it for extra points. We can also unofficially officially tell me we won't pick Lombard with the pick if he is still available.

              Re: 2024 Rolling Draft Order

The full comment from AFL.com.au - we are very briefly mentioned at the end. Very likely that the suns are able to get a future first for it.

GOLD Coast's call on pick 13 could hold the key to Dan Houston's hopes of returning to Victoria as the Suns weigh hot interest in the selection.

Collingwood and Carlton are among the pack of clubs fiercely chasing the pick, which Gold Coast has up for grabs given if it keeps the selection a bid will come on Academy prospect Leo Lombard.

The Magpies are trying to attain pick 13 as part of the John Noble deal, but that would likely require Collingwood giving back a strong future pick, such as its 2025 first-round selection.

Their interest in Houston has remained strong since their meeting with the Port half-back last month and with forward Joe Richards looking more likely to take up the Power's offer, could look to combine the selection and Richards to send for Houston.

Carlton is attempting to get the Suns' pick using at least its future first-round pick, with the Blues then wanting to pass it on to Port in a deal for Houston. That alone would not get a deal done with the Power, who are happy to keep Houston in 2025 if a suitable trade cannot be reached.

North Melbourne's future first-round pick has also been put up for trade for Houston, with the Kangaroos offering a five-year deal for the dual All-Australian.

Melbourne has its future first-round pick on the table for the Suns' selection as well, while Sydney has looked at packaging its first-round picks to move up the board. The Giants, now armed with picks 15, 16 and 21, could also look to shift up the board while the Western Bulldogs are another club to have been linked with the selection.

The Dogs also met with Houston last month in his round of catch-ups with Victorian clubs and have been keen on the damaging playmaker. – Callum Twomey

Unfortunately 35, 46 (Jack?) & 47 isn’t enough for their 13 by the time they need to make some profit in points unless we F1 trade again!

Might be closer to Brisbane’s Pick 20 though which is also needing to be sold off.

If we could get 20 to cover the 13 the trade looks even better. If we can get 17 & F1 off Geelong then again, we’ve covered that loss off.

If we can’t trade in some bigger fish, then two late firsts this year is not nothing. If we have two F1 next year and millions in the cap then hopefully next year might be the year we land a better player with the picks and cash on hand.

No...the 17 and F1 would cover the loss of Smith.

I did do the numbers and saw that it was basically the same cost, which when combined with other teams offering future firsts , means we are very unlikely to nab 13.

Yep. I was surprised to see us mentioned as chasing the pick, as it needs to be an F1. I’m not much of a gambler, we win the spin of the roulette wheel and not sure I want to double down. The only thing I could think of is if there’s an F1 with Smith, instead of carrying two into next year that Power trades one into this year. But Geelong won’t do Smith quickly, so we might be too far behind the pack chasing it. Plus SOS sounds like slow walking Macrae too. It’s an argument to make the trade period even shorter.

The Brisbane pick is the more realistic option for us and even that might be a stretch. If we were to get two late picks in the first round via a pick for Smith and the Brisbane pick then we would be in a terrific position to take advantage of a strong draft and then back it up with some later more speculative picks.

Even shorter for me. Shit or get off the pot. We know they’ve been working behind the scenes and SOS & Mackie will drag things out to pressure us to accept less for fear other deals could fall over. I don’t like it. You want Jack, pay the low price of 46 and take the win. You want Smith for two picks in the 20’s. Take the win and move on. Then try to let us turn those picks into something so we can get something from players leaving for low prices. But the AFEL needs to dominate ConTeNt so good for them. Hopefully we can still have a shot at trading up again this year.

Trade week and a half is run for Essendon's benefit only, they do their best work at this time of year, everyone knows that.
