The GCS Trade is Taking Shape

So let’s do the math first:

After shuffling we got Picks 6, 45 & 45 last year, it looks like pick 45 this year (could be 44, let?s take 45).

    3 x 45 = 1,041 Draft Points in
    Pick 6 = 1,757 Draft Points in

Total in: 2,798 Draft Points in

    Picks 13 & 23 out last year = 2,027 Draft Points Out

Depending on finish this year, plus an Ashcroft bid and maybe Battle compo pushing it out: (not getting ahead of ourselves)

Giving GCS (inc. 2,027 from last year):

    Pick 12 = 1,268 (3,295) - deficit 497 = Pick 37
    Pick 13 = 1,212 (3,239) - deficit 441 = Pick 40
    Pick 14 = 1,161 (3,188) - deficit 390 = Pick 43
    Pick 15 = 1,112 (3,139) - deficit 341 = Pick 46
    Pick 16 = 1,067 (3,094) - deficit 296 = Pick 49

So without getting to far ahead of ourselves, a losing elim final with Ashcroft & Battle is costing us draft points about worth Pick 43. If we do better, it could be the mere points equal to a pick in the 50’s. That’s a premium of just a third rounder!

    Outstanding.

    The players:

    Sanders (long term player)
    Freijah (long term player)
Croft (1/3 of his points, hopefully long term player)
    Pick 45 this year

    Outstanding

    The Vibe:

    Say Out: 13, 15 & 23
    In: 6, 45, 45 & 45

I would not trade Picks 13 & 15 for Pick 6 in a vacuum, so that is massive. That parts a clear win for us.

Then we take a down grade of 23 to 45, for two extra pick 45?s. Where the list manager used one toward Croft and the other the recruiters grabbed JF. Massive again.

    Take Away:

With the Suns falling away and our late season resurgence, this trade is flipping on its head. We are nominally paying a third rounder for the rights to the players we took. A bargain. If you were offered Sanders, JF, 1/3 of Croft and Pick 45 this year for two picks in the teens and one in the 20’s you'd laugh before immediately accepting it. The better we go this season, the less we give up and the better it gets again. But right now, the list manager and recruiters must be stoked the boys are making an ok trade look like brilliance. I’ve said many a time, even a 9th place finish would have the trade at an ok level. But our on field wins look like tipping it in our favour, where it’s a win-win trade.

Who knows, it seems Smith will get us back into the first round and English will stay for ok money or we match the bid and trade him too. So we won’t be short on good picks to use this year either. And there?s clearly some cash around if we are offering Barrass $1M x 5 years.

At a minimum it looks like we make finals and that always seemed around the bar for it being a 'passable' trade. If we can win the next 3 and get 5th or above then even better the gamble pays off

Love the game, and in the case, the odds.

BT, I really appreciate you sharing your analysis with all of us and I agree 100% agree with your takeaway.
Just clicking a like or thanks option really doesn't express my appreciation.

I've never liked the risk in this trade. I understand that it was always a calculated risk and that the current ladder positions would have been what we forecast, but it could have so easily gone the other way.

If we make second week of finals I will feel very good about the end result of the trade.

            Nice BT.

I'd make a play for Finn Callaghan if we have a war chest! Screw Barrass.

Finn is related to Bevo . So hopefully there is some family love showing.

Making finals means that at best we parted for two picks in the teens for Sanders. That's a big win especially because Croft was always going to take our first rounder last year.

                  Great analysis.

I liked the trade then, and I love it now. There's real value in getting someone into your team early. As in, if we had a similar pick this year and got Sanders (well, a make believe exactly the same player) in this draft, there's 1 year of development we don't have.

I think deals like this are an important part of keeping a fresh list. Say we keep next year's first rounder, and we finish top (woo hoo) we get a late first rounder... but can we trade it this year to get an earlier pick this year? A gamble, cause maybe we bomb next year... but in some ways, not such a gamble if you think your team is getting better.

If we somehow traded Baz & F2 for a first and F1. With the first hopefully for Barrass. I’d look at trading one of the F1 for a late first this year and load up. If we can strengthen our defence while our mids are at peak and forwards improving, then we should attack the next 5 year period.

So it looks like this before our final. Right now it’s Pick 13 which is likely to slide to Pick 16. So the premium we paid for the trade is this:

                      Pick 16 = 1,067 (3,094) - deficit 296 draft points = Pick 49

                      **** all.

We took a risk and it could have really stuffed up but it's looking good now. Even better if a win a couple of finals.

Beat the Hawks at it drops to =Pick 56.

Now if there’s another FS or Academy kid that slots in in between that about Pick 60.
