Re: Williamstown vs Geelong
Well, that was fricking cold cold cold. And then it cooled down.
Big win by the boys, Geelong nabbed a heap of goals in the last, with Pods absolutely gifted 3 on Everitt.
It's worth noting there is a serious gap on handball ability between most of the Bulldog listed players & alot of the Willy guys - quick hands by some of our boys was heartening to watch. There were quite a few WOOFers there so we should get a few opinions on teh boys. My thoughts:
Roughead - No hope of getting a balanced appraisal as I'm a bit of a fan. He didn;t get alot of it (especially in the first half) and early he actually tapped marking contests to advantage that I though he should have gone for and marked. He was much better in the second half, kicked a nice banana goal in the 3rd. Interesting to watch him at the centre contests - a couple of times his opponent won the tap, but he still managed to get a hand on his opponent's so he effected the contest top stop Geelong getting a clear take away. Raw, but seems like he will learn quickly.
Grant - Was better than last time I saw him, really attacks the contest and his hands are just super clean, either marking or handballing. His desperation caused turnovers at least twioce, one resulting in a goal. Looked very good playing almost a small forward role, roved the packs & either fed off or chipped kicked, ended up with 2 goals that I saw.
Stack - Probably the best game I've seen him play, he attacked the contests hard & had two very telling pick ups that resulted in shots on goal down the field. One in particular, on the outer wing in the second would have warmed the hearts of Doggies supporters. Quite good overhead, almost took a big pack mark in the last against bigger opponents. Hill's debut in 07 is paying dividends now, I'm hoping the same will apply for Stack in 2010/11. Kicked a couple of beautiful long passes.
Cordy - Not a great game from Cordy, just couldn't get to enough contests, although he had Lonergan on him for most of the first half. He still looks likely off the ball and his defnsive pressure is good. Hurt in the last when he managed to get approximately 472m off the ground, and hit the deck head first.
Everitt - Just looked way above VFL level in the first 3 quarters; his kicking skill level was so far above everyone else for most of the day it wasn't funny. He had Pods kick 3 on him in the last, maybe the first one was a soft free but he was very unlucky on the last two. He's developing into a tough player, as long as he's not body on body under the ball he will spoil (big spoil in the 2nd quarter). Our best tall backman.
Wight - Let himself down once, apart from that he was solid down back, took a couple of nice grabs and his disposal was generally above average. I know people get into Cam a bit but he was one of our better backman today.
Williams - Very good second quarter, didn't get much of it otherwise & it was mentioned he was "stuffed" at 3 qtr time,. I was hoping it was a fitness comment, sadly I don't think so. Not sighted in the last.
Reid - If anyone wasn;t a Reid fan already, they would be after today. Clearly our best player in the first half, I would give him best Bulldog player overall as well. Got plenty of the ball (mostly as an inside mid), his kicking was good (despite his reputation for dodgy kicking, it was a feature today) kicked a goal in the last and laid a couple of big tackles. I think he could play AFL if we needed him based on today's performance. Big tick Sammy.
O'Keefe - A bit quiter by his standards, but he will still get the ball and contribute. He was a bit better than average but he seems to be a "contributer" at times, rather than a playmaker that he could probably be.
Skipper - Fumbled a bit early, including a mark in the 1st he should have taken. Still battled on and improved after halftime. Chased hard and is not scared to put his body in. He does seem conscious of protecting his teammates too, watching closely he is definately someone who is more team-focussed than selfish which is pleasing.
Callan - Is another who is obviously AFL-ready. Played dfeence today and was solid, ran hard, tackled well. His propensity to lose his footing under the high ball only occurred once that I saw, in the last. Copped a big hit at the start of the final quarter, on the ground for a fair while (must have been hard to put Timmy down) but managed to get back on the paddock, even though the result was beyond doubt. Was singled out by Gotch for his good work at the 3 qtr time huddle.
Addison - Our hardest tackler out there, he is good once the ball hits the deck. His kicking has improved oiut of sight from a couple of years ago. Still can get lost under a high ball and his judgement overhead wasn;t as bad as last time I saw him, but it can still be a liability. Tough boy though.Western Bulldogs: 2016 PremiersComment

Re: Williamstown vs Geelong
Just back from the game, Williamstown won the game by about 10 goals (20 goals to 10 - Geelong kicked 8 goals to 2 in the last qtr)
It was a typical cold & windy day down at Burbank Oval which is possibly the worst place to be in the Melbourne metro area on such a day. Caught up with quite a few WOOF regulars which was good.
Bulldog players:
Williams: Did ok, took a couple of nice grabs, but certainly looked short of a run. Wasn't seen for most of the last qtr, but didn't see him involved in an incident. I can only assume he was taken off as a pre-caution.
Everitt: Played a pretty solid game, but let himself down in the last qtr when he was outmarked in a couple of duels. His kicking on a whole was excellent in the blustery conditions.
Wight: Another solid contributor, but I think he is just biding time.
Callan: As per normal he put his line on the line when it was required (and even when it wasn't). He was very good as a small defender.
Addison: Held his own in defence and was solid around the contest, but let himself down with some poor kicks and decisions.
Skipper: Solid game, Keeps on keeping on, but he is probably starting to get resigned to the fact that he may not get an opportunity.
Reid: I thought was very good. Strong around the contest and his tackling was a real feature.
Stack: He flashed in and out of the game, but on a whole he was quite good. He certainly looked to try and impose himself on the game by trying to get involved more so than I have seen in the past.
Roughead: Ok in his 1st senior game, kicked a nice run goal which showed a fair bit of talent for a guy his size. His tap work looked good and will be better for the run.
Cordy: Did some good things, but as is said every week he is just too slight at present.
Grant: His hands were good as he fired off some nice handballs, but just didn't get enough of it. His pace off the mark is very good, but he just needs to get stronger & fitter.
O'Keefe: Did some nice things, but his kicking was a bit hit and miss. He looked fitter than the last time I saw him in action so hopefully that is improving.
I'm sure others will add some more as they get home and thaw out.
From the Williamstown guys Rose & Little both got amongst the goals.Comment

Re: Williamstown vs Geelong
Just some quick notes
Addison - Very lucky not to have been reported for his clash with Stokes. Decent performer but he struggled with his skills in the blustery conditions.
O'Keefe - Butchered his first kick before settling down and getting a fair bit of it. Some nice tackles and quick handballs were a feature. He copped a bit of attention by the Geelong defenders.
Reid - Solid game and did better in the second half than the first. His disposal wasn't great and he might be a player who racks up good stats but the quality just isn't always there. Handballs were often not to the best advantage of his team mates. but he got a fair bit of the footy.
Skipper - Another good display by Skipper and he really does try and bring his team mates into the game. Very mature display.
Everitt - I really liked his game today and there was a fair bit of poise and dash.
Roughead - Did well in conditions that didn't really suit him. Rotated in the ruck and one of the highlights was a well executed handball to Patrick Rose for an easy goal. He needs to improve his marking but his ruckwork is advanced for his age.
Cordy - Seems to be out of sorts and just can't get into the flow of the game. Perhaps needs a spell or a run in the magoos.
Williams - Didn't do a lot to be honest but he also didn't make any glaring errors. We didn't get to see him in the last quarter. 5 minutes into the first quarter he was off for a spell so he might be underdone from a fitness perspective. He was on and off the ground frequently.
Callan - Reliable and a hard worker as you would expect. Solid for most of the game and typically used the ball well. He wouldn't have got huge stats.
Stack - Wasted some early chances but got better as the game wore on. Plenty of run and dash and kept pushing himself hard through the game.
Grant - Started on the bench in the first 2 quarters and was very quiet. Grant was a lot better in the second half and got amongst the action. His marking was quite good given the conditions.
Wight - He performed very well and actually handled the conditions better than most. He might have made a couple of skill errors in the 2nd half but he more than did his job today.
