As a vet he is an extra player, he's not replaced by another draftee, he's replaced by an extra rookie - on about $25K.

I can't see Eagle playing on for $50K (wich is less than half the minimum wage anyway).

As a vet he'll be replaced by a senior list player, as I understand we have the option of a total of 6 vets/rookies with 2 vets max. Adding him to the vet list frees up a main spot.

In any case, a saving of $20-$30k is peanuts compared to the whole salary cap.

With Picken being elevated, into Eagle's spot (essentially) whatever happens, it's moot.

As good as his last two were, I think it's time to see what the next generation has got. Give them the responsibility and hopefully see them flourish.

He'll be replaced on the senior list regardless of whether he is vet listed or delisted.

Option 1. Delist Eagle and pick up another rookie - cost $25K
Option 2. Vet list Eagle - actual cost $300K, salary cap cost $150K

The salary cap is one thing, but we don't pay all of our allowances now, we can't afford to, so Eagle entire salary is still an issue. Personally, I'd say thanks, Eagle, but it's time.

He is on nowhere near this amount though. If he was, you'd be totally correct.

The question will probably rest on how many picks we need anyway, as we could be in the strange position of a top 4 finishing side with a 6+ turnover of players on our list.

I would be very surprised if he is not - a 250 game player, 200 with us. He would be on every bit of that.

The average salary for an AFL player is $250k

If we’re paying Brian way under value, Higgins is getting half of what he would at GC, Eagle (a 200 game veteran) isn’t getting paid close to $300K and our cap is bursting at the seams, it begs the question – who’s getting paid all the money?

You beat me to the punch Comrade, I was thinking that last night, Geelong are full of superstars and the Hawks aren't near cap capacity. I know we're a top 4 side, but how are we so close to 100% and where is it going?

Brian is on about $275K, not the ridiculous amount Hutchy quoted on TFS a few weeks back.

Even $275K is only 3.5% of the cap – still way under value.

We’ve got a reasonably young list with plenty of guys at the bottom end that have either played minimal or no AFL games, which would suggest they are on getting paid either the base AFL wage or close to it.

This is just guess work but I’d assume that over a quarter of the 22 that ran out against Geelong – Ward, Harbrow, Picken, Hill, Reid and Addison – would be on the lower end of the pay scale.

Are we overpaying a minority of players and therefore are feeling salary cap pressure, or is this just a normal occurrence and nothing to worry about?

Are we definitely under salary cap pressure or are we just speculating? All I can remember hearing that points to this is Aker saying Lake, Hargrave & Higgins deserve more and he would be prepared to take a cut. Leaving the bigger re-signings until the end of the season makes sense, as in the middle of the year there are too many variables to make a clear decision
If you kicked five goals and Tom Boyd kicked five goals, Tom Boyd kicked more goals than you.

We are very near the capacity that we can pay so some hard decisions will need to be made.
