    Draft Changes 2009

No link, but from today's Herald Sun:

The AFL has brought forward the 2009 National Draft to November 26 (Thursday) & given Foxtel permission for an NFL-style countdown.

The league has traditionally held its annual player draft early on a Saturday morning to allow maximum exposure.

Under the plan the first 10 picks of the draft would be held behind closed doors, before being counted down publicly from ten to one.

Several networks have previously televised the draft, but it has never been a ratings winner.

The draft was originally to be held on Saturday November 28.

I think it would be at night, say 7.30pm or after.

I don't mind this idea and it probably allows everyone to know a little bit more about the kids as they are picked up.

Bit strange they are just doing a top 10, rather than the whole first round though - would be a bit more interesting to everyone if they were all involved in the countdown.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

I'll be watching. I hope the dogs do the same article with the age they've been doing for the last few years about our planning and naming hopeful targets. I love reading that our plans worked out as we hoped.

Wow those changes are really exciting. They'll turn a somewhat mundane affair (except for footy nerds) into a super mega entertainment spectacle
It won't change the fact that 90% of people won't have ever seen these kids play and therefore don't know much about them apart from what they read and see on the internet, most of which is people talking out their arse. And that includes the journalists for major outlets.
It'll never be the NFL or NBA draft because the kids don't have 2-4 years of national exposure before the draft on which to make some sort of judgement for the majority of the football following populace.
Oh and the top 10 countdown is the ****ing stupidest idea I've ever heard.
How awesome is it going to be next year finding out who GC17 picked with the first 45 picks of the draft...in reverse? Although it'll be tough to choose because they'll already have most of the decent kids on their list.
Lipstick on ****ing pig I tells ya.

A simple "I'm not that interested in the draft" would have sufficed Underdog.

I love the draft, like most here I get all excited despite not knowing most of the kids from my own. I'm just sick of the AFL and the media trying to sex up something that is inherently football nerdism at its nth degree.
The people who watch it are going to watch it regardless. The people who don't care aren't going to be drawn in by turning it into Countdown.
Apparently it's much more interesting when you're actually there
