    Re: Matt Burgans phantom draft

If Jetta, JMP, Sheppard and Moore are all gone I wonder in that case if we might stump for Bartlett. He may have some defensive deficiencies to work on, but he does seem to have some star potential.

It's going to be very interesting to see how it all plays out.

It doesn't take into account where Luke Ball might end up either. There are a lot of variables in this draft; Matt Burgan was on Sen this morning, and he said it has been the toughest draft he has ever had, and was still changing things right up until the last minute.

I like to retain a faint hope that somehow we will acquire Black, Talia or Butcher - through the drafting of a player that was not in the first 10 pick calculations. I look forward to tomorrow to see which young pup we welcome to the Kennel.

If one of our preffered options arent available at 15, what's the general feeling about picking up Tapscott? His skills are exciting and he looks like he could play senior footy next year.

His skills are very overrated. People are mistaking the best kick in the draft for the most powerful kick imo. Tapscott may have every bit as powerful and penetrating kick as Rich did last year, but Rich was also uncanny in his accuracy of kicking, where Tapscott is good but not elite and definitely not the best.

Another area in which he is likened to Daniel Rich is the maturity in body, which, wrongly or rightly, caused Rich to slide last year - so it's not thought of as a good thing.

Him likening himself to Shaun Higgins in the afl.com.au profile would indicate that he doesn't know his own game either, which is always a concern. Needless to say, I'd be disappointed if we selected him with our first pick.

Nice little write up regarding Howard in this mornings paper. Sounds like a promising type.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

He has played mainly as a forward, and has poise and kicks quite a few goals, so I'm not sure the comparison is totally unwarranted - Tapscott certainly at this stage isn't as good a shape or as smooth a mover as Higgins - but I think they do have some similar attributes.

I wouldn't think he'd be on our radar for #15, and should be gone by our second selection anyway. Port and the Crows are both apparently pretty keen, and perhaps a side like Sydney, Fremantle or West Coast may also pounce in the early second round.

Personally I think he's a bit like Chapman, I'm surprised Tapscott will be over looked by Port Adelaide considering I heard they had strong interest in him at 8 or 9 earlier on.

Could well go at #16 - and I actually think he'd be a good fit for them. I'm not convinced they'll grab a ruck like Matt B's Phantom suggested (mainly because a developing ruck doesn't fix their need which is immediate) - so you're right Port are definitely a good chance.

I'm a little surprised at the experts predicting Port Adelaide to draft another ruckman, too. As you say - they have an immediate need to improve and picking up a player who is 4 years off isn't really going to help them short term. They've also got 3 or 4 young rucks on their list currently.

I agree Tapscott would be a good fit for them. I thought we may be inclined to look at him considering the bulk of our forwards are very much in their last 4 or so years. He's a strong player and I think he's going to be a handy contributor at AFL level.

(NB the tackle was paid as a free against, too high)
