It's hard to garner anything with the press going GaGa over a number 1 pick dominating a VFL match. He should be performing in a VFL game

and 11 possessions as well, IIRC. Good on him. Quite a few new names in the willy squad. Have to get down there and check them out.

                      Re: Williamstown Teams: Round 1

I wasn't in a position to get out to Casey on Saturday but one of my friends, who I regularly attend games with, emailed me his match summation. Seeing as there's little to any Woof post match commentary I thought you may be interested in one person's perspective albeit not my own.

I thought you might like a match report on the Casey v. Willi game on Saturday night. It was a tight, hard-fought game with scores close all night. Panos played on the forward line, not CHB where he was named. He played well but in the second half he did quite a bit of ruckwork where he was less effective. This was compounded in the last quarter when Campbell, who had won well in the ruck and was one of our best players, was off the ground with some sort of injury. This meant that Panos and Tom Hill had to alternate in the ruck which weakened both the ruck and the forward line. This probably led to Willi losing the quarter and the game. Incidentally I am moving towards the view that Campbell may be the best ruckman we have at the club. I am not there yet, as he is not there yet, but the other three will need to start producing to keep in front of him.

Young Talia played fairly well at full back, especially in the second half, but he was on Jack Watts for some of the time and the task was probably beyond him at this stage. Fletcher Robert had a better match although he may not have had such a good opponent. Mulligan was about as good as he was last year, and you can guess what that means. Skinner played as a sort of forward flank/pocket player. He was good in the first half but did not seem to do so well in the second. Sherman and Djerrkura both looked rusty and short of match practice, especially in the first half. As the game went on the latter got more of the ball, although his disposal still lets him down. Tom Hill showed that he might develop as a tall forward, and Lin Jong showed a bit.

Of the Willi players I was surprised that Ben Jolley was named as best player but I suppose he had a fair bit of the ball in close. Brett Goodes played well although he was caught with the ball a bit too much. As a close match it could have gone either way, but Casey as a team had more experience which told in the last quarter, along with the loss of Campbell.

                      See you next Sunday.

Below is the match report from the Williamstown website (doesn't really shed any new light on the game).

Seagulls Fall Short in Night Thriller

Williamstown has suffered a disappointing loss in the opening round to the Casey Scorpions at Casey Fields. It was the more desperate home side that won the ball when it mattered under the lights in Cranbourne. In what was a tight tussle all night Casey held off a late charge from the Seagulls to hold on to a 2 point victory.

The Williamstown side featured only 7 players from the 2011 Grand Final, highlighting the changing of the guard over the pre-season. After a minute’s silence from both teams to honour the late Jim Stynes the game started with a high intensity. It was Casey who came out the stronger of the two sides dominating the opening stages to take an early lead. A couple of late Seagulls goals closed the margin to 3 points at the first change.

Matthew Panos was the main benefactor of some good midfield work from Ben Jolley, Jamie McNamara and Brett Goodes as he kicked two goals in as many minutes to kick the start the Seagulls in the second term. Zephaniah Skinner was also exciting the crowd with his aerial prowess, taking a couple of memorable marks. This however sparked the Scorpions back into life as they closed the quarter with three unanswered goals to take a 13 point lead into the main break. Poor skill errors were hurting the Seagulls resulting in costly turnovers.

The third quarter started with the Seagulls playing with greater intensity as they gained momentum across the ground. Young Bulldogs Recruit Fletcher Roberts was holding down the fort down back while Tom Campbell was winning the aerial duel in the ruck. A strong end to the quarter resulted in the Seagulls taking the lead through goals from Tom Campbell and Justin Sherman as the visitors held a slender lead at the last change.

With all to play for it was Casey who responded to snatch back the lead in the early staged through a Jack Watts goal. The last quarter resembled a desperate scramble with both sides fighting for possession and territory. A late Jason Johannisen goal cut the margin back to 2 points late in the game but time was against the visitors as Casey held on for the win in front of their supporters.

                            Casey Scorpions 3.4 8.7 9.7 13.9 (87)

                            Williamstown 3.1 6.6 10.9 12.13 (85)

                            GOALS:

Williamstown: Panos 3 Cravino 2 Hooper Hoghton JOHANNISEN Campbell Sherman SKINNER Redpath

                            BEST:

Williamstown: Jolley Roberts Campbell Goodes Djerrkura MCNAMARA

                            Development Report:

Williamstown has won their Round 1 game in convincing style, defeating Casey by 62 points in their season opener. There were plenty of new faces on display for the Seagulls with no fewer than 10 first year players making their debut. It was the likes of “older” players such as Ed Carr, Steven Witkowski, Kwame McHarg, Dylan Conway, Anton Woods, Justin Morris and Nick Sing that led the way on the day.

The young Seagulls impressed with their ball movement and ruthlessness as they surged clear after half time.

                            Casey Scorpions 3.2 5.3 6.6 9.7 (61)

                            Williamstown 2.2 9.4 16.5 19.9 (123)

                            GOALS:
