Re: Round 1 foxtel cup- Williamstown v South Adelaide

Watched the last three quarters on Foxtel.

    * Skinner - Did a couple of nice things, created good opportunites for goal further down the ground with some nice passing. Took a nice one handed mark and passed on to ?? who kicked a goal. Needs to get into the game more.

    * Moles - When he gets the ball he can be very creative. Kicked a nice goal using his pace to run at least 50 metres and slot it through. My biggest criticism has been for a midfielder, he doesn't get enough of the ball.

    * Hooper - played back pocket and had lots of the ball, looked ok at this level in a defensive role.

    * Jong - Good game from the 18 year old, had plenty of the ball and uses it well.

    * Smith - Once more his kicking let him down, otherwise was in amongst the best.

    * Panos played forward, kicked a couple and missed a few easy ones as well.

    * Redpath - This bloke can roost a ball. Not sure where he was playing as the kicks he got were on centre wing, but I thought he moved well. Haven't seen much of him.

Can't remember much about the other Bulldogs listed players.

I saw bits and pieces of the telecast but not much of the second half, so take my brief comments with more than a grain of salt.

First time I'd seen Redpath play and he moved well and took a few nice marks leading up between 50-70m out. His ball use wasn't the best.

Panos kicked a shocker early from about 50 out on an angle that missed the lot. Both of his goals were fairly easy ones and he didn't look comfortable with the high ball coming in. Going to be an important month or so for Panos to string together a few games.

Hill is a good shape, moves well and I think he shows enough to persist with.

Jong goes in and has a bit of dash about him. Going to be one to watch as he's a great physical package for AFL.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

Just watched the game on delay, what a horrible and uninspiring game of football. Scrappy from opening bounce to final siren, terrible skills from both teams, very little creativity, and goal kicking of the quality you'd expect from an after work scratch match team.

Willi the more horrible of the two.

Not a good fortnight for Williamstown.
Our 1954 premiership players are our heroes, and it has to be said that Charlie was their hero.

The game was matched by horrible commentary from Mark Readings ( didn't know any players names)Not a lot to get out of these games from a Dog Perspective.
Smith was good, but that kicking as we know needs work.

Very poor standard game in what was pretty good conditions.

Hooper and Smith battled away but their disposal isn't good enough. With Hooper it's more about concentration and decision making but Smith has a flawed technique. It's really disappointing to see him butcher the ball repeatedly and it's and added shame because he does throw his body around and is physical in contests.

Hill is a far way off being a ruckman at the senior level but is developing nicely.

Barry Hall was doing special comments as well.
At one stage there interplay for a goal between about 5 williamstown players and the only one named was the last.

If Smith can at least become an adequate kick he'll be good.
There's numerous players that were awful kicks that have improved to be at least adequate.
Jobe Watson is a perfect example of someone who basically wouldn't kick at one stage!!
He has a lot of work in front of him

Smith looks like a gun in the making for me. Once he gets used to the speed and physicality of playing against the grown ups his skills will improve.

Fatigue affects decision making and the actual execution of any skill and he quite often kicks under pressure too. Very early days for him.

These were possessions he had in the clear though and early in the game and not ones under the more AFL intensity that he will get as his career progresses. If I thought his skills dropped off once fatigue set in I would see where you are coming from but throughout the game his kicking was just poor. It's not like the Panthers had put a lot of pressure on him.
There are a few positives but right at this moment forwards wouldn't trust him to get close to kicking it where they lead into.

For sure. I am not saying he will be the next Leon Cameron but I expect he could become effective by foot once he understands his limitations better and is generally fitter.
