    TAC Cup & Australian U/18's Comps 2014

TAC Cup starts this week, looking forward to a cracking year with potentially a Cordy, Foster & Macpherson across bottom age, top age & U/19 to excite us. A defensive utility, midfielder and full forward would be handy, but first things first we will see if they can make their teams consistently with a view on form to get the Vic squads.

Should be a good year in the TAC.

New format unveiled for national under-18 titles

RIVALS Vic Country and Vic Metro will open the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in this year's revamped carnival format.

The 2014 championships will see the four division one teams – both Victorian sides, South Australia and Western Australia – feature in a six-round home-and-away fixture.

It is a switch from the structure of previous seasons, which has been a five-round series with cross-division games.

The new program will give players more opportunities to impress, with the Victorian sides kicking off proceedings at Visy Park on May 18.

The format will also allow more players to represent their state, with AFL rules forcing division one teams to play a minimum of 32 players from their squads with a minimum of two games each.

Last year's division one winners South Australia will start its title defence at home against Western Australia at AAMI Stadium, but will not close its campaign at Etihad Stadium like recent years.

SA will finish by playing Vic Metro at Simonds Stadium on July 3, with division two sides Queensland and NSW/ACT to meet at Etihad on July 2 before Vic Country and Western Australia.

Although the division two sides will play fewer games than recent seasons and won't play against the division one teams, their fixture is balanced against the fact they will play more TAC Cup games this year.

A 'rising stars' squad of the best prospects from division two will also be picked to play against the 2014/2015 AFL National Academy team in a game during Grand Final week.

This year's crop is considered to have more depth than last year, with a number of key position players seen as likely early picks.

Many will feature in the AIS-AFL Academy's match against Collingwood's VFL side on Friday, April 4, at the MCG as a curtain raiser to the Hawthorn/Fremantle Grand Final re-match.

The Academy will then travel to Europe the following day for a two-week tour and training camp, splitting time in London and Milan.

      This fella kicked 6 today:

      Tom Lamb
      Dandy Stringrays
      192cm / 84kg

Lamb is an athletic tall who can use his aerobic base to run up and down the wing to attract the ball on the lead. He's strong overhead, and competes at ground level. Injury stopped him from participating in Vic Country's under-18 program but he has a lot of talent and can play at either end of the ground. (Source: afl.com.au)

        Thanks BT.

Going to be a good year to go tall early. Looking forward to the Champs and learning more about the guys we might be able to select.
Have you heard Butters wants to come to the Dogs?

I'm certain there will be a good tall at our pick (I'm guessing pick 5), and there's tall FS's too should we take them.

As I type this, Fosters co-tall target at Calder, Peter Wright has kicked 4 in the first quarter against the Knights.

Damn. I wish I was there, but not feeling the best. Any updates appreciated G, there should be our next big forward playing today, just which one depends on ladder position.

Goddard can really accelerate when he needs to. McCartin hasn't done a lot but when he's around the contest things happen.
Duggan is skillful and a strong tackler. Brayshaw looks to be a good midfielder.

I have liked a couple of the defenders, very athletic

Good players all over the ground

I can't see Wright slipping down to 5 with the hype that will come his way. Goddard & McCartin more likely, can you picture them in the tri-colours G?

They might all be gone before our pick. I think this year is a strong draft for taller players.

If any side is looking for an athletic 193cm defender who can play on a flank then on today's performance Caleb Marchbank would be worth a look at. He can run and has a great leap and holds his marks. His kicking skills in the windy conditions were a bit harder to judge but I like the idea of players that can play as a KPP or a flanker.

He reminded me a bit of Sydneys Alex Johnson as a junior.
