Triple M footy has tweeted that Wayne Carey has said that Jon Patton was recently offered a 5 year $5m contract by the Bulldogs and knocked it back.

Don't know how reliable or true it is (I saw it as Mark Stevens gave it a re-tweet) but very interesting. Can't see us being able to offer anything more than that to him.

I like that we are being bold where we need to, but if its true and he didnt take it, we can cross him off the wish list as I can't see how we could offer him much more.

Patton could do better than that, I'd be offering him at least a 7 maybe 8 year contract with AT LEAST a million per season.

I will elaborate on my previous comment.

He has already had knee injuries. Where he is, he has real competition for a spot with Boyd and Cameron. I have seen enough of Boyd to know that he will displace Patton permanently within 12 months. Boyd and Cameron will always be picked before him. Structurally, there won't be room for him at GWS.

WB: crying out for a player like him and have as much chance as GWS at going up the ladder over the next five years.

I think there is nothing in the rumour or we didn't come up with 5 years $5m.

This is why Campbell's bad year really pisses me off. He is about the same size as Boyd & Patton. In the second half of last season he was played at FF, averaged 1.5 goals a game and showed enough to suggest he could own the position going forward. I thought we had unearthed a genuine money-ball gorilla FF. Very disappointed with his form this year. We wouldn't even be bothering with Patton acquisition rumours if Campbell had just continued on from where he left off last season.
