I thought we had unearthed a genuine money-ball gorilla FF. Very disappointed with his form this year. We wouldn't even be bothering with Patton acquisition rumours if Campbell had just continued on from where he left off last season.
Campbell is being groomed as a ruckman to takeover from Minson .

Patton is a number one draft pick oozing with talent. If this rumour is true, then I am glad we are actually getting serious about snaring a big forward.

That's true, the club has given up on him as a KPF.

Not true, they never wanted him to be a KPF. Ruckman first, resting ruck forward second.

Same here. Good on the club for having a crack.
Campbell is a ruck man who can punch hit up forward, whereas Patton's a bona fide star

I don't believe any club would have made an offer like that. Player managers are sounded out all year and I think Carey is projecting that a club, possibly ours, has put together that type of offer.

I'd find it hard to believe.

Well, he couldn't get a game as a ruck when they brought him down. Then they had what seemed an inspired move and played him as a permanent forward game after game with not a little success in the second half of last year. At the start of this year, they did the same with him but he lost all form in the off season and they dropped him. So I think the evidence is there that the club did experiment with him as a KPF.

Plus we are interested in Jaskcschsshcks

If we got him, we might be able to shift Roughead forward.

While it looks like an option that you would like to jump at these are my concerns

                  1. Patton has a history of injuries as F'scary pointed out.
                  2. If we got him it would certainly stretch our salary cap - there would a lot of pressure on him to perform and if he doesn't well... It would be a massive waste.

So the question we need to ask ourselves is: Is it better we poach someone from another club or do we look to the draft for the best young forward. Lots for the recruiters to ponder.

All that matters is that calm thinking prevails. Trading for fringe players is yet to ever, ever, never worked for us. So picking a big fish is a healthy philosophical evolution. At some point BMac, as a human, will think about trading to improve team performance. He can't get to 4 years without improvement on the ladder, and other internal managers will be wanting wins, crowds or other KPI's. So pressure builds. So long as JMac holds his nerve were good. I'm backing JMac to make the right call under any internal or external pressure. If he can land a player that makes a difference at pick 5 or trade, cool.

Agree with the assessment, J Mac has done precious little wrong to this point in his time with us. He's dealt well at the trade table, Stew Crameri was a fair coup and for the most part contract extensions have been relatively well handled. Whether we go draft or trade I have a healthy optimism the club will make the right call.

If it's true and we have made a big money offer to Patton I'm all for it, looking at our club in the cold light of day do we have anything to offer except opportunity and buckets of cash? The reality is probably not.

I think we need to roll the dice. Be active. It does 2 things:

                        1) could net us a player we desperately need; and
                        2) make the new teams pay overs to keep their stars.

                          Excellent summation .
We don't need a roll call of our failed fringe "saviour" forwards .
Roll the dice for a gun, and if that doesn't work, just use the draft.

As an example, last year i called for the trade of Minson and our pick to GWS for Tom Boyd, given our ladder position again this year, its probably the last chance for a sub Pick 5 pick for hopefully 10 years, so I think we need to leverage it.

its a good draft so it has real value, so lets do it, package someone up with the pick and lets get that big fish, Our forward line has all the components of a high scoring team, but we just don't have that focal get out of jail player.

There is no reason not to, we need a pillar to anchor the team over the next 10 years, lets pay the price for it.

I'm 100% for netting a key forward the question for me is should we throw everything to get Patton with the risk that it might not work out as we are aware that he has had knee injuries. What if we get him and something like that happens to him fingers crossed that nothing will then we would probably be thinking then that we should of stuck to getting a star in the draft. I think we need to tread carefully with this.

I think if it wasn't for the sub rule and we could afford a ruck on the bench I would develop Campbell as a FF. He has size and a good pair of hands and not a bad kick. Macca has commented that Tom has been concentrating on his ruck craft, I think he should be developed as a forward that can pinch hit if need. Cordy becomes the next main ruck.
Then this will leave us to chase a good back man or two.
