    Re: RIP David Bowie

Sad news. Loved Bowie. Unfortunately never saw him live (one of my big regrets. Would of loved to have been older in '78 (and in '83) to see him at his peak. Some of the earlier film clips of him performing are sensational. Was it top of the pops where he did Jean Genie - wow.

    He really was music royalty.

Most of the comment on Bowie's work has focussed on his 70s stuff and rightfully so, it is magnificent. I think his recent stuff is overlooked though. For anyone interested, I have posted 2 tracks I think are of particular merit and especially moving at this time.

The 2nd track, I voted for the as my song of the year in JJJs Hottest 100 that year (a couple of years ago) - it references his Berlin days, I find his vocal very haunting in this. The 1st track was made in recent months when he knew he was very sick- it's like 10 songs in 1, mental and brilliant - so many ideas.

Hope somebody get something from these.

Merry X-Mas Mr Lawrence showed David's quality as a person. The story was one of the very few films that showed some complexity in the portrayal of Japanese soldiers. A highly intelligent man.

Funny I was talking about that film with my daughter last week and we were keen to watch it. I must do that when she is back from her break.

If you have the time and inclination, the personal and private photos and messages from other artists on Twitter are touching. Particularly Yoko Ono who wrote that her and John didn't really have many 'friends or family', but that David was close and kind that he was actually like family. Also that after John was murdered that Sean went to boarding school in Switzerland. And while there Bowie would take Sean on day trips and would let him hang out in his recording studios.

Some nice things from Iggy Pop, Yoko Ono, Keith Richards, Queen, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Dave Grohl and more.

A great Icon. I saw him again on EXTRAS last night. Even his "Chubby Little Loser" song was great.

I just listened to that on YouTube. How awesome is it, not only hilarious but the actual music and production is from the very top shelf as you say. It's in my head now, and I tend to sing songs in my head when walking around, just not quite under my breath. I might have to be careful walking around strangers saying 'chubby little loser'.

He probably spent 6 months writing it. He was a perfectionist.

True TD, Bowie was a perfectionist. Given that, his workrate was phenomenal - especially in the 70s.

Consider this; between December 71 and October 77, he released 10 albums in under 6 years - all meticulously crafted classics, most of which appear prominently in greatest albums of all time lists (most artists these days struggle for an album every 3 years despite technology apparently making things easier).

Whilst banging out intricate works of genius every few months, he simultaneously produced or mixed at least 10 other albums for other artists, including classics by Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, The Stooges and Mott The Hoople that are still widely heard and much loved 40 years later.

Also conducted at least 3 major tours, lead acted in major movies and moved home to at least 3 different countries (travelling by sea and rail as he had a morbid fear of flying).

I've read a couple of biographies on Bowie. By 1977 he was very ill, in part from his insane workrate (he worked relentlessly every day for years, apparently often without sleep), in part from the amount of drugs he took to keep going.

Been listening to nothing but Bowie all week - everything from Space Oddity/Man Who Sold the World, the Ziggy/Aladdin Sane/Diamond Dogs hot streak, the plastic soul and coke fuelled mid 70's, the Berlin trilogy, Scary Monsters era, the 80's commercial stuff, and especially Blackstar, which is a hell of a way to sign off from this life. It is quite amazing that such disparate genres and sounds all came from the one mind. He gives me hope that everybody has it within them the ability to try and make the world a better place - he certainly did.

I'm even going to give Tin Machine a spin
