Re: Different or unusual hobbies you have

Although it's not current (I hadn't jumped on one since late last year), I've been taking static trapeze lessons on and off for about 8 years now.
Took it up at the ripe old age of 27 and wondered where the hell it had been all my life. It finally gave me a reason to work out and be strong, rather than just doing weights at the gym for the sake of it. Before I had kids (the reason for the offs), I was never fitter and stronger - cycling to work 2-3 a week, a couple of strength sessions and a couple of trap sessions. And I haven't found anything quite as fun as being able to sit on a trapeze and just roll back and drop to hanging on by my feet. I'd love to train upper body again properly, but I've been so slack for so long that I'll probably end up doing a shoulder in my enthusiasm.
For the moment I'm sticking to the spin bike (which I hired before the world went mad and am very thankful for) and sloooooooooooow rides with my four year old and 18mth old on the back. We've built up to 11km round trips - takes us about 2 hours though (including snack breaks)
Wake me up when we get to heaven, let me sleep if we're going to hell

Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath

And we all found heaven - 2016 Premiers!

I've just starting cycling again. In my twenties I rode everywhere, couldn't drive, and I was so fit and didn't even realise it. Like DOTW, let myself go when I had kids and have just inherited a bike and discovered how much I missed it. At the moment I'm going out for a 20 minute ride early in the morning and it's saving my sanity. There is nothing like the sheer freedom of cruising down a hill or pumping along a straight... and I enjoy the wind in my hair as the serious cyclists whoosh past me

It’s knitting or reading for me at the moment in my “at home stage”..make sure I go for an hour walk and listen to a podcast or 2
I find if I am knitting I am not forever going to the fridge!
Still working 2 days a week so am getting some interaction with others

Used to play guitar as a teen/early 20s. Full time work and a move away from guitar heavy bands kind of changed it for me though, and after a few years of minimal playing it was too much of a slog to get back into. A lack of inspiration didn't help, and it was/is so frustrating knowing how much worse I am than I used to be.

Still love music though, and have owned a piano for about a year now which I am slowly learning. Finding it a much more satisfying instrument than the guitar for it's ability to sound so full and complete without needing any other instruments, although finding the learning process very challenging.

This lockdown has been good for pushing me to learn more though, and i have also been focusing a lot on using this downtime to listen to albums in full from both artists I already love and some I'm trying. Probably going through 3 to 4 albums per day.
I should leave it alone but you're not right

Mine is Lawn Bowls ... been playing since my mid thirties. Absolutely obsessed with it. I play pennants, club comps, state events, country events, any chance I get to have a bowl in my hand. It’s a great escape from work. One must also have a very understanding wife to play as much as I do.

I also love to play poker. Got a proper poker table and ceramic chips. Trying to find a time to play with all the mates though is difficult. When we get together, it’s usually for money ... tournament style.

That reminds me that I have been playing a bit of Trugo lately-A weird western suburban sport that is like a cross between lawn bowls and croquet. It was invented by workers at the Newport rail yards during meal breaks so a lot of the dimensions of the game correlate with the inside of a 1930s train carriage. You stand with your back to the target and hit a disc with a mallet aiming to get it between two posts over a distance of 25-30 metres.

It's a great game. At one stage I had a World ranking inside the top 50. Although that's slightly less impressive when you consider that there are probably no more than 100 players worldwide and most of those are over the age of 70.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

For me a couple years ago after watching some streams and listening to some podcasts I began playing D&D online. We play online once a week for 4 hours or more usually and finished an adventure (first one I've been part of that actually finished) last week which took about 2 and a half years.

I also run my own game with a different group.

Have those online social hobbies have been great during the whole lockdown. While there are still numbers and fighting the focus now days is often on the roleplaying aspect. The hobby itself has gotten much more popular in the last 5-10 years too.

So that's my nerdy ass hobby. Anything anyone else does?
Funny, during lockdown I began playing with my kids as a way to get them off devices and to start using their brains a little. Its good fun!

That's awesome. Do you run the occasional one-shot or have you started a full on adventure?

My unusual hobby is that I love juggling. Been doing it for over a decade. Find it relaxing and keeps your coordination in tact. I haven't got more the 4 balls going at once yet although I did have 5 in the air for a short time but Mrs. BFL keeps telling me it doesn't count. My party trick is to walk into a friend's house or new acquaintance's house and grab 3 oranges or apples and start juggling. I did it last week.
