He told them he wasn't the only one on the road ... He told them to go solve real crimes (with a few expletives in there) ... They ask him to put his hands behind his back, he puts them in his pockets thinking its funny, then wonders what he did wrong.

I would have loved him in our team ... It might have proved the difference in the early 2000s, but if Carlton didn't have the resources to handle him, we certainly wouldn't have.

It would be easier to rate books / CDs etc. if we had a variety of emoticons ??

Imagine the possibilities ... Giving Barry Hall's book 8 boxing gloves out of 10, or giving Akermanis' effort 3 knobs out of 10 ... But what emoticon would you use for 50 Shades of Grey?

        Good question. Bloody good question.

Maybe a or a or any of them depending on how your love life is travelling...
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I've been waiting to buy High Fidelity by Nick Hornby off the Book Depository for aaaaaages, finally came back in stock so I am currently reading that (and loving it. I've seen the film which I like a lot, but I like the book more).

Next is 'Survivor' by Chuck Palahniuk and 'Glue' by Irvine Welsh. I think I'm going to struggle with Glue, it's all Scottish slang and writing (if that makes sense?).

Half way through Angels of Vengeance from John Birmingham (final installment in the Without Warning & After America trilogy) JB's not scared to kill significant characters off.

Got Carlos Ruiz Zafon's new one Prisoner of Heaven (also the third in a trilogy) next

Just finished A Darkness More Than Night by Michael Connelly. It's about ten years old, and quite a well done murder, justice and detective story. Not too overdone either, and a nice slow but engaging pace throughout.

I don't really go for these types of books anymore, I probably read too many Reebus novels in my time I think, but this one was a nice change from what I've been reading recently.
                TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.

I love Michael Connelly, have all of his books. I must go back & read from the start as I have forgotten the earlier ones.

Stick with the Irvine Welsh, after a while it clicks in you start thinking in the Scottish accent and it all makes sense.

I'm nearly finished with Nixonland, an epic historical novel of American history in train with Nixon's career and presidency. It's fantastic but has taken me forever.

Picked up a Special Edition copy of The mind and times of Reg Mombassa for a crazy $10, covering his time as an artist (Mambo) and the band Mental As Anything, he certainly is a lovable larrakin.

Where did you find this mighty_west? Love Mental as Anything! At a trivia night the other week the question was asked about which member went on to create the Mambo designs and I was the only one who knew.

At a book store here in Brisbane called QBD, it's similar to Dymmocks.

I'm also a fan of the Mentals from way back, and a huge fan of Mambo, always wanted to purchase the book when first released for around $80, glad I held off, the special edition has a hard case for the book to slip in as well as a 24 month calander featuring different artworks for each month.

I'm a little bit short on material that I really want to read at the moment, so if you can recommend some of his work to me that might be good filler reading I'd appreciate it. Crime books are very good filler.

I'm currently reading We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver, and to be honest I'm struggling with the monologue from a woman's perspective with minimal dialogue between protaginasts (plus the there's too many words on the one page, but I won't mention that in fear of being labelled a dullard! ).

I'm sure it will open up, I'll get used to the perspective and it will prove itself to be a rewarding read, but I'm not feeling it right now.

I can vouch for Chuck Pahlaniuk's efforts. Survivor is very good, and I got a lot out of Lullaby and Diary. Very dry work.

As far as Irving Welsh is concerned, I found Filth probably the most confronting and disgusting book I've read. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, but Jesus, the main play was pretty full on. I also read Porno without reading Trainspotting (second favourite film) and it was still good.

I've been a little bit lazy with my reading on this thread, so sorry if I'm repeating.

Has anyone read Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee? It's probably in the top five for me, and one I need to re-read pretty soon.
