Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall

    - If anyone on here runs on a semi/regular basis you need to read this book
    Ahh RIP Caballo Blanco!

This was a great book, but the thing that bothered me about it was the author potting Dean Karnazes for self promoting, but geeking out over Scott Jurek.

It was like he was angry about Karnazes beating him to the ultra-running-book punch.

Just tell a good story, man.

He only died very recently, within the last few months.

Sorry, that was thoughtless of me. Even though it does seem like a spoiler, it doesn't have any connection to the book.

These are very much brilliant books. The way he mixes politics, management and the obvious futurisms is exceptional.

Re: Book On The Bedside Table

So I've recently dusted off a couple of Phillip K Dick's books.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch

He was the type of guy that thought paranoid people were following him, and he was so strung out most of the time that he couldn't put many drafts together, so some of his finished products were a bit shabby. But for the love of god, PKD was a genuine believer in alternative realities that reflect our lives more closely than what most people would be comfortable with.

Currently reading All I Knew by Peter Goldsworthy, and just finished The Sound of One Hand Clapping by Richard Flannagan.

Both are very good insights into periodic Australian life, in the regional areas of South Australia and Tasmania respectively. Some really sad and depressing aspects to each of these books. Little wonder I can barely get out of bed most mornings!

No problems. I thought there was going to be a tragic ending.

Whilst fighting my wife for the Kindle so I can read my digital version of all five books of Game of Thrones, I picked up Fev: In My Own Words. It's not a bad read.

Very easy to read, and a great insight into his troubled footy career ... As a footy fan I recommend it.

More like read it (maybe) after the co-author had finished writing it. I read an extract in the paper, it all seemed a bit 'poor bugger me' to my eye. The bit about the events leading up the his baby falling off the bed just didnt seem to add up for a start. I'd have to reread it but from memory the timeline just didnt seem right, like he was leaving something out.

It was most definitely written by a ghost writer ... Some of the words used he would never had even heard let alone used in a sentence. In saying that though, it really is a good insight into what it takes to get draughted. He talks about playing junior footy with Matty Boyd and growing up next door to Chris Newman. He is also mystified when the Bulldogs take Nicky Winmar with a pick in the 20s over him (picked in the 30s).

Worth a read ... I give it 6 alcoholic beverages out of 10.

Hehe! 6 alcoholic beverages. I wish we had a thumbs up emoticon.

With the Winmar thing I still maintain that if Winmar had played in week one of the finals against West Coast in 1999 we would have won the game and most likely gone onto win the flag. it was a windy and rainy night and we cried out for someone with good ball handling skills who could kick a goal or put the ball to a teamate's advantage. It was exactly the sitaution we drafted Winmar for but he was injured on the night. Then it would have been been seen as a stroke of genius.

And there are a lot of things that seem to mystify Fev.

She has now read books 1-3 ... Three times ... Suffice to say we both enjoyed them, and I haven't read a word.
