    Re: Book On The Bedside Table

    Oh and I am reading this one via osmosis;

    That is my son found it on my bookshelf and decided to read it. He has taken to reading a chapter and then telling me all about the weird facts he's discovered.
    They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

        That's them, from her descriptions they did celebrate on the new desk - Jan Murray described the desk as big as a billiard table and after the event she left a little parting gift for Brown's minder in the ashtray to let him know she was there (the minder told her earlier that day that Brown was too busy to see her).

        I am now three quarters of the way through the book will let you know if there was a second scandal and the PB controversy.

            I'm reading Shane Crawford's book at the moment - "That's what I'm talking about", it's actually very good and am halfway through it. Has anyone else read it?

              Happened to see him at one of his book signings recently, also when he ran past my place that night finishing up his pink ribbon run (we live right across the road from the Channel 9 studios.. Eddie nearly ran his Lexus into our car one morning as he took the corner at 100 miles an hour, SEN is also right around the corner, see some Morning Glory guests on our way to work quite often as they park close by).

              I thought he was pretty small, the wife thought he was pretty huge.

                Sounds like fun times haha, if you compare him to the average footballer Crawf is probably on the shortish side. I met him a few years back re: a work function, he's a really nice person and very friendly to chat with. It's a very good book if anyone's interested in reading it.

                    Re: Book On The Bedside Table

                    Just going to bump this thread and suggest a couple of books I've read recently:

                    Alter of Bones - new novel from Philip Carter, though it is rumoured to be an alias. If you like Dan Brown, this sh*ts all over him for depth of plot and concept.....you wont put it down.

                    Agent 6 - new book from a guy called Tom Rob Smith. Its the third in a series the other 2 being Child 44 and The Secret Speech. They are set in communist USSR and this book rounds out the trilogy well. Only just published but worth reading!

                    On the non-fiction side I can recommend Mao: The Unknown Story......just brutal, but a really good insight into how the Chinese have industrialised in 30 years when its took most of the Western Work closer to 200 years.

                      We are Soldiers Still. Follow up to We were Soldiers Once and Young. A group of retired US Air Cavalry members return to the Da Yang (?) Valley in South Vietnam, the scene of the first major skirmish in the Vietnam War. Great read.

                        Re: Book On The Bedside Table

                        Started reading Jasper Jones last night, interesting so far.

                        Last book/s were the Dragon Tatto trilogy - very enjoyable read.

                        I had a good run of books I liked before that - Shadow of the Wind, Book Thief and Snow Falling on Cedars all quality reads I've got through in the past 12-18 months.

                          Re: Book On The Bedside Table

                          At the moment I'm reading two books (as the first one is a tough slog to get through):

                          1. The Great War by Les Carlyon - Focusing mainly on the Western Front in WW1, it's a great followup to his widely acclaimed "Gallipoli".

                          2. Just read The Old Man And The Sea by Hemingway - Every bloke should read this book. Says everything about what a man should be, in my view.

                          Plan on reading soon:

                          1. Dead Or Alive by Tom Clancy - Love Clancy, my missus bought me this one recently, have read every other Jack Ryan book he's written.

                          2. The Man Who Broke Into Auschwitz by Denis Avey - Recommended by Cooney via Twitter, sounds like just the kind of thing I'd be into, so gonna give it a crack.

                            Re: Book On The Bedside Table

                            Thanks to Borders at Highpoint closing (by the last day they were selling books at a dollar a pop-good titles too) I have plenty of books in my 'waiting' pile. ATM I am reading this;

                            Not really the sort of thing you'd tackle unless you had a significant interest in or knowledge of the topic already. It doesnt really discuss the tapestry as such but more the fact that it's been a miracle that it's survived for nearly 950 years and how it's survived.

                            As well I haver this sitting on the back seat of the car and sneak a look when i get a chance (usually waiting for the kids to finish at school, cubs, soccer training etc.)

                            Interesting method of writing a book. The author has taken all sorts of trivia and joined them up with a sort of circular logic by starting each chapter with a statement and then moving through a series of non-sequiturs through all sorts of trivia before arriving back at the original statement.
                            They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

                              Re: Book On The Bedside Table

                              Jasper Jones is a great book. They marketed it initially as young adult but it's a very strong crossover title imo. I met Craig Silvey last year, he is a lovely bloke too.

                              I picked up a few treasures at the Moonee Ponds A&R closing down sale. Brenda Walker's Reading By Moonlight - she writes about how different books and authors helped her through cancer treatment. Margo Lanagan's Tender Morsels which is brilliant, but not for the faint-hearted - not a kids book either, though they've sold it as such in this country.
                              Took a punt on Tony Wilson's Making News, though it seems to have been ovetaken by real events! Anyone read it?

                                Is that the tapestry from the credits of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves with Kevin “Yankee Robin” Costner?
