I wouldn't call that music. Refer to DR's thread on Chic Flicks.

Just answered the movie thread, may be some clues there, though it's such a diverse list I wouldn't think it would be TOO obvious..

Okay, I could go on forever, so I'll keep it short:

I am a musician by trade (well, one of my current trades, in any case), and currently do a lot of producing and writing, so a lot of the stuff I listen to these days are from really obscure places, so I'll leave them out, although that's some of the best stuff. My best mate is a drum and bass DJ and producer over in Manchester, and he sends me a lot of great stuff from the local scene over there. There's this really funny old vinyl record he pulled out called 'How to Speak Hip'.. anyway, I digress.

Some of the best commercially available music I've listened to in recent times are guys like Chris Joss (really old school funk), Herbert (um, smooth techno pop, I suppose), St Germain (yes, the uber-popular lounge music) and the incredible acoustic guitar work of Raul Midon (this blind guy, and only his guitar work, mind you, his songwriting is somewhat twee), and the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack.

As far as more classic music goes, I've always had a soft spot for Miles Davis circa "Kind of Blue", followed all of Smashing Pumpkins' career, and my favourite musical genius, so to speak, is Erik Satie, a French piano impressionist from the turn of the 20th century (they still murder his more accessible work occasionally in commercials).

Interpol, Kronos Quartet, Philip Glass, Joni Mitchell, Saint Etienne, Sigur Ros, Postal Service, Jimmy Chamberlin Complex, etc etc. et al.

Anyone else here have a MSO season ticket?

              Oh, and U2, of course.

(I've listed all the more obvious stuff I like to give a handle on what I listen to more so than as an exhaustive list.. I think the curse of working in the industry is that you end up liking a lot of stuff but not really having anything you love a whole lot)

Thats fine, not everyone likes the same stuff. But to be honest im going through a pretty tough time right now, and if it wasnt for human natures music it would make things a lot more tougher.

So its all good, you and other people can not like human nature, but there getting me through the toughest part of my life right now, and i love them even more.

                        Hey dude, hang in there.

It's really cool that music is helping you through a tough time .. you know, at the end of the day, that's what music is all about. Cultural communication. Did you know that in most cultures EVERYBODY sings and makes music? It's only in our Western, humanistic, standards-based, 'myth of progress' society that music is considered the domain of the 'talented', or skilled, and a measuring stick of worth, which, while creating some incredible works of art, has marginalised a large proportion of us, thus so many of us saying 'I can't sing' or other rubbish like that. If Human Nature speaks to you in some way that nothing else can, than you have tapped into the fundamental, emotional, social and cultural nature of what music does, and don't let anyone embarrass you for that.

Once again, hang in there, and I hope things get better for you.

                        Cheers.

I've heard of about 10% of the bands listed in this thread - and most of those were around 30 years ago.

Re: Favourite Musical Artist or Band

I have a million bands I really enjoy, although the frequency of bands that really blow me away is dropping sharply.
The last one to knock me out was a band called McLusky who were a Welsh trio playing kind of post Pixies rock with very dry, funny lyrics. Their standout album was McLusky Does Dallas and was followed up with the almost as good The Difference Between You and Me Is That I'm Not On Fire, slightly heavier and more serious than the album before.
They broke up a couple of years ago but 2 of the 3 formed a band called Future of The Left who are playing this Thursday and Friday at the Northcote Social Club. I'll be there both nights

As an aside the bass player had a band called Shooting At Unarmed Men who he reformed anew when he moved to Melbourne post McLusky breakup, so they're now a local band. I'd recommend them if you're out and about and like a bit of angular rock.

                                Sleep on the floor
                                Dream about me
