That's fair. Based purely on results, he has to rate with our greatest ever all-rounders, probably only Keith Miller would rate as superior as a genuine all-rounder.

He was certainly a test standard player but he never quite reached his potential. As a batsman he just didn't make enough centuries and too often gave his wicket away with overly ambitious shot selections. His bowling was quiet good but injuries often limited his performances.

This was close to what I meant. Unfulfilled on all his potential and never reached the level he could have. Also it was pretty damning when Pat Howard (I think it was) sunk the boots in when Watto quit the India tour after homework gate.

Good move to focus on short form cricket. Watson entered the IPL auction with a $400,000 reserve on his head. But walked away from the auction with $1,980,000.

Don't you hate auctioneers who under quote and you waste your Saturday bidding on something you couldn't ever really afford. And dumb-y bidders of course.

Watson's income was estimated at $6 million before this auction, will be more now. For a guy who is deemed a bit of an unfulfilled talent, he is doing damn well out of the game. Best payed Australian cricketer in history by a margin.

I thought Warnie got over $2M? Good on him I say, but not sure why he attracts that kind of money. But his hundred vs India in the last 20/20 was great timing.

Yeah he did, but his overall salary wasn't as high. Back then he got IPL plus Aust contract, whereas Watson and the others now get Aust contract, IPL, Big Bash and all the T20 franchises (Watson will be playing domestic T20 for Islamabad in Pakistan later this month prior to IPL).

Man I wish just once I had hand eye coordination I a sporting sense instead of my charm, wit and rugged good looks.

I get frustrated knowing that due to its length cricket is a game that will never attract the best or most coordinated players.

But Watson's almost the perfect 20-20 player. Gun bat, gun bowl to the extent the format allows.

                      Good luck to him.

He underperformed as a test player but if we were putting together Australia's greatest ever limited overs side, he's definitely in the discussion. Good on him for cashing in

He's also won the IPL MVP twice, he's the only player to do it. Not surprised by his auction price.

His 124 not out for Australia against India in an international T20 immediately before the auction didn't hurt either. His move to promote himself to opener for that match was a financial masterstroke.

Can't knock him. If he plays the world T20 circuit for two years he will have more cash than he will ever know what do to with.

Much like when Clarke retired, I wonder how former team mates, or CA types like Patty or even Mickey Arthur, will react and make comments publicly.
