Quite randomly I was at Glenelg Oval just before 6 PM on Thursday when the Vic Lads went out to the pitch and sang a song that sounded like the North Melbourne club song. Not sure if Mick Lewis was allowed to join them

Yeah, I don't like that song. And I think it was EJ who instituted it too. As a big Vee footy theme song
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

That is correct. An interesting thing about North Melbourne's song is that it was originally Geelong's song. When the Cats ditched it in favour of "We Are Geelong" to the tune of the Toreador Song from the musical Carmen, North adopted it... Always thought that was a touch bin scabby!!

For the record, the North song (and old Geelong song) is based on a Scottish folk song call "A Wee Deoch an Doris"

They aren't the English version though, they don't hold up on harder pitches so it's closer to the Duke ball used in the West Indies. They trialled it in the Futures League and apparently it wasn't anything substantial to talk about

Deoch is Gaelic for a drink, I believe. So "A wee Deoch an doris" means "a little drink before I (or you) go." Or "one for the road" as we would say nowadays.

The words to "We are Geelong" were written by an ex player John Watts.

That's right. In the 1960's. Prior to that, Geelong's song was "Join in the chorus." When they adopted the Watts lyrics to the Toreador song, North snaffled the cast-off "Join in the Chorus" as their own.

As it's also the Big V and also the cricket team song, I recall some discussion on another forum a few years back, over "Whose song was it first? The Vics or North?"

Typically, Norf fans were all over it - "definitely ours! No doubt!"
However, the answer was Geelong FC, then the Big V, then the Vic Shield side. Thus making Norf a distant fourth....

Norf's web page even pointed out that "Join in the chorus" is one of the oldest football songs in Australia, blah, blah, blah..... I find it cheeky seeing as, although that claim is correct, they only bin scabbed it from Geelong in the 1960's.

Sometimes Norf get a little kool-Aidish like their Essendon neighbours..

North have sung that song since the VFA days

                        Re: Sheffield Shield 2015/16

North knocked the song off Geelong. Geelong eventually ditched it in 1963 - presumably as North had copied it. In fact, North had also copied Geelong's guernseys if you go back far enough (as did we, actually.)

It's often the case in local footy leagues that two clubs will have the same song. It was the case in the VFL until 1963.

For the record, Geelong's original version was:

Out they come, out they come, out they come to play
Just for recreation sake to pass the time of day
Lots of fun, heaps of fun all so merry and gay
Geelong boys are hard to beat when they come out to play

So join in the chorus, sing it one and all,
Join in the chorus, Geelong are on the ball
Good old Geelong well beat them every time
For Geelong will be Premiers in (insert year)

Oh! You cant be unhappy if you sing, sing, sing
So lift up your voices do, throw out your chest and
hope for the best and sing, sing, sing
We are a bonny lot, and each one is a star and
If you care to join us, you’ll find us at the bar

And if you care to join us you will find that
Were all right, for each one is a member
of the bonny Blue and White

Should old acquaintance be forgot, keep your
eye on the Blue and White

                        Too Right!

("We are Geelong" is an obvious improvement!)

                          Back to cricket please fellas.

I'm not sold on poaching Marcus Harris from WA. Talented little player but not sure he can put it together

Does this mean they think Quiney is done and they will look for Harris to open with Dean?
