I hope someone can explain to me where the selfishness by Waugh came in.

Warne is a real turd of a person.

Although I don't disagree with your assessment of Warne as a person, I could attempt to answer the question on Steve Waugh. I do recall discussing with those in the know back in the day, the fact that Waugh placed himself comfortably in the numbers 5 & 6 positions in the batting order. This was long after he ceased to bowl.

Some people within cricket circles observed that, rather than moving up the order and allowing younger, newer players to find their feet at Test level in the cushier 5 or 6 slots, Waugh stayed put. He also "loved the red ink" according to some. (ie. The "not out.")

Not saying I necessarily agree with it, but many would remember the pressure and heat that was put on Michael Clarke for not doing so many years later - and he did it for a much shorter period than Waugh.

The above is on field (and debatable!). Off field, however, Waugh's reputation as a selfless contributor to charities and social awareness is extremely strong..... More so than Sir Shane's, perhaps!

In 500 years' time people will be looking at our generation - with our obsession on reality TV, competition shows (be they renovating, cooking, or singing/performing) featuring everyday people with enormous egos and no discernible talent, the Kardashians and every other talentless but high profile scumbag - and just shake their heads at our moronic stupidity.

I've never really understood what was so great about the moment. The he didn't have to do it the next day? I get it was his last test but there seemed to be some importance placed on it being the last ball

All it was was that the crowd who were in attendance wanted the hundred made so that they could get to see it. Most wouldn't have been returning for the following day's play and so, were willing it home. Thus the reaction. Of course, channel 9's commentators and the media at large beat it up into some kind of miracle moment.

He went out the next morning without adding to his score, which placed his average under 50. Or course he batted on for a further 12 months to rape and pillage against the might of Bangladesh so he could retire with an average over 50.

He was selfish but most successful cricketers are.

I think every cricketer is selfish to a degree, and after facing the might of the windies in their prime , I understand why he could fill his boots .
As for Warne, he's a great cricketer, but it sounds like sour grapes .
He was playing poorly and got duly dropped, and the fact he was overlooked for the captaincy may have a role here also.
As much as Waugh may be selfish, Warne is incredibly self indulgent

Warne makes me laugh.

Has their ever been another player who:

- was banned for taking money from bookies in exchange for information (excuse: I done nothing wrong, they only gave me tens of thousands of dollars for stuff everyone knows),
- was banned for taking prohibited substances (excuse: me mum gave it to me),
- repeatedly allowed his sloppy indiscretions with women to make it into the tabloid domain (that takes some serious carelessness, given what a lot of the others have reputedly gotten away with over the years),
- took money from dodgy outfits like smoking cure companies (despite still being filmed smoking in public), hair replacement studios, texting apps (cheeky bastard), McDonalds (direct competitor to main ACB sponsor, KFC), and betting firms (!!!)

and still blamed others when he was passed over for captaincy roles?

Not sure when the actual interview originally aired but I saw Funky Miller on fox sports cricket legends earlier this week and he discussed this moment as a real turning point in the relationship between Warne and Waugh. Apparently they were good before the axing. Was a good listen.
