New Years Test - Australia vs Pakistan

Australia has omitted both Chadd Sayers and Nic Maddinson from the last test squad of 13 adding Steve O'Keefe and Ashton Agar as the replacements

It would appear that Hilton Cartwright is a good chance to debut for Australia unless Agar is being considered for the number 6 or 7 spot. Wade survives but he will have to improve with the gloves and bat.

Maddinson just didn't grasp his chance and Bird's and Lyons form pushes Sayers out of the mix.

Umpire Gould is as pro Australia as Aleem Dar is anti-Australia. Some very marginal calls went our way in this test at crucial times.

And may we never see Maddinson representing Australia in any sport ever again.

I remember reading similar comments on Steve Smith years ago. I don't think Maddinson has it but we can't write him off given his age.

Whilst I'm annoyed about finding a bug in my soup at dinner, I stand by the gist. Maddinson not being written off because of age is a ing to not writing off Luke Goetz from being selected for the All Australian side down the track because he's young. Maddinson should never have been selected and his shithouse three tests are the evidence (while everyone else above him was dining out, and everyone bar Wade below probably outdoing him too). When the Ch9 producers showed a graphic of his high scores when he hit 5* shows even they're thinking this was a horrible idea. Everyone has a player that they just don't like, be it Brad Murphy or Ben Harrison in footy talk, and you'd guess Maddinson is my cricket one.

Maddinson rates highly in that area for me as does Wade but if he goes back to shield cricket and makes a lot of runs I'm not against him getting another go. In my opinion he shouldn't have been picked but that's a mistake others made.

True re your last point. I wonder how the selectors are held to account for a howler of a choice? Or is CA just too busy counting stacks of BBL cash to have performing selectors.

Love to see Agar back in and see what he can do at test level.

Our chase for an all-rounder continues with Cartwright a good chance to play tomorrow.

On ability Glenn Maxwell should at least be in the conversations for a test spot in Sydney but just doesn't seem to be in the mix.
I'm not sure if it's because with his bowling he is an off spinner and we already have Lyon or because he mouthed off the other day or if it's just because he doesn't put enough value on his wicket when batting but if Maxwell doesn't get his act together soon he's going to struggle to be regarded as anything more than a limited over player.

If Cartwright plays then I suspect one of the pace bowlers will be dropped and either SOK or AA getting a go.

Wednesday I think mate. Which makes it a bit of a stretch to call it a New Years test.

I saw Cartright on the news bowling in the nets. He's pretty nippy and gets the ball to slide through. Maxwel doesn't get mentioned because he's added being a dickhead to the mix of his all round abilities and we appear to have abandoned the dickhead policy at national level. It's a shame because he is a very talented player.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I wonder if selectors look at a potential player's performance in the media/public sphere when determining their temperament/suitability for Test cricket.

Might go a long way to explaining why Maxwell has been left out.

I've no doubt that the media performance of a player impacts on their selection chances.

It seems the options for this test are to play Agar for Maddinson at 6 and leave everything else unchanged or to bring in Cartwright and a 2nd spinner in place of Maddinson and a paceman (presumably Bird). To me, option A is the more appealing and logical.
