Does he get a discount because the he is Ben Stokes?
Not sure about English law but GBH requires pretty significant injury and culpability levels . Probably couldn't make the higher offence stick.

Or they didn't want to. Either or.

From what I can make out it comes down to intent. Because Stokes didn't turn up looking for trouble and the fight broke out sort of organically (I guess) he gets charged with the lesser offence. If there had been no mitigating factor and he'd just waded in and given the bloke a smack with no provocation then it could have been GBH. The difference is a maximum 5 year term versus a potential life sentence.

      And an Ashes tour obviously!
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

Interesting Shield results from a 1st test perspective.
Maxwell scored a couple of 60's against SA, but he only bowled 7 overs in two good sized SA innings.
Jake Lehmann had a classy century in the first innings and Ferguson had a massive 182
Carey scored a 36 and 20 with the bat

Maddinson scored 16 and 22 which probably rules him out...probably
Bancroft carried the bat for WA in the first innings with 76 of 176 and then backed it up with 86 in the 2nd innings
Shaun Marsh failed in the first inings with 2 and then a 91 in the 2nd innings. I'd say the #6 is his spot to lose now
Nevill scored 32 in the first innings and 11 nout in the 2nd innings

Wade hasn't made enough runs and now must be under pressure to hold his spot

                    I didn't pick that up.

Looks like the bowlers are all in good form and the bats are struggling

Cricket.com.au has Bancroft now in the mix for a test spot at number 6. In the 303 overs of the game he was in the field for 279 of them. He is the only keeper who has opened the batting and carried the bat for an innings.
You have to wonder if his batting would have been a bit sharper if he wasn't keeping as well. He doesn't score at a clip I think the selectors will want so I still have him as a long shot despite his form

You've raised the idea of him taking the gloves in the past - I think the selectors would be seriously tempted now.

I watched is keeping the other day, It's better than I expected.

Could he open the batting (without the gloves) if Renshaw doesn't make runs?

I think it'd be too much - especially over 5 days. I could see them giving S Marsh the openers spot if they do drop Renshaw and hand Bancroft the gloves.

I really don't understand the sudden haste from the selectors to leave Renshaw out though - he has enough credits for the first two tests in my eyes.

How is Renshaw even in trouble for a series in Australia?

184 in his last innings in Aus.

I'm ok with them questioning his performances in the sub continent but not at home just yet.

I said Bancroft as just an opener without the gloves. I'm a fan of Renshaw, I'd be sticking with him

I agree, he shouldn't be in the conversation but for some reason he appears to be.
