I didn’t stay up for the game, but just knew I’d wake up to this type of commentary this morning.
The game just can’t help itself, big occasions bring out the worst in it.
It's not like the AFL is any different. It's just that a goal in soccer is worth so much more so a refereeing decision can have a greater impact. Friday night watching some of the blues saints game, there were 3 "expert commentators" all ex players arguing profusely if there was a free kick or not. Some were adamant there was a free, others were adamant there wasn't. That's what our game has become. The so called experts and players of the game are at complete opposite ends of interpretation. How the hell does an umpire have a chance of getting things right.
I didn't see the Final, so not sure on the decisions, but i suppose there is less interpretation with some decisions in soccer.
Croatia dominated the first half - unlucky not to be ahead at the break.
Penalty may be there 'by the strictest law', but it shouldn't have been paid IMO. It did change the momentum/complexion of the match a little.
Having said that, France kicked it up three gears in the second half.
Overall - a great tournament.
Fantastic tournament. 9 out of 10 I reckon from the actual games to the almost complete lack of controversy meaning that all the journalism was about the football on the pitch.
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

The only minor controversies were a couple of political statements, both of which were dealt with, and some simulation antics, in which the players involved came out looking rather foolish.
Overall a well played, well officiated, well run tournament.
Not holding my breath that Qatar will replicate the experience.

The penalty was no more or less a pen than the one we got against Denmark. VAR, as with most technologies, works best when it is consistently applied, and for the most part I reckon it was consistent in the World Cup.
Absolutely cracking tournament - best World Cup since USA 1994 which was a beauty (except the crap final). Feeling my post WC flat spell today - my favourite sporting tournament in the world by a mile.
As others have stated a fabulous tournament. France worthy winners although with a bit of luck Croatia could have snatched a victory today, however in the end France deserved to win. Clearly the dominant team of the tournament.
Modric, Griezmann and Hazard for mine were the three standout players.
Looking back at Australia's performance we can say that we gave the world champions a real scare (granted it was the first game and France were not at their peak).
Whilst I will miss the WC, as it is the greatest sporting month on the planet, i won't miss the lack of sleep.
