Third Ashes Test - Headingley August 22 to 26 2019

Third test starts in a few days. If Smith is ruled out, who comes in?
What about the openers, do we stick with them? Does Starc get his chance, does Pattinson come back in?

    Lots to think about.

It won't happen but I would go:

    Harris
    Khawaja
    Labuschagne
    Smith
    Head
    Wade
    Paine
    Cummins
    Pattinson
    Lyon
    Hazlewood

If Smith isn't right Warner gets a reprieve and Khawaja and Marnus drop down one spot.

If Cummins needs a spell I'm not sure whether Starc or Siddle would be the better option.

That would be close to my test side. However I can't see us changing two openers. Its not like Harris as set the world alight during his time in England. If anything he has been poor.

My other concern is Wade. The 2nd innings 100 aside, he has been pretty poor. Essentially, when the pressure is on he has failed. I also think that they may stick with Siddle and drop Hazelwood.

I'm prepared to give Bancroft one more chance, particularly given that his short leg fielding can help change a match.
Warner is as good as a man short unless the game is played in Australia or South Africa....

        Bancroft
        Khawaja
        Labuschagne
        Smith
        Head
        Wade
        Paine
        Cummins
Pattinson (I prefer Starc - but Pattinson seems to be the plan)
        Hazlewood
        Lyon

I'm sticking with Warner for no other reason except that between he and Bancroft, Warner has 21 test hundreds. Neither look like getting a score, so I'd go with the guy that's done it at this level before.

Marnus is the obvious in for Smith if he doesn't come up, otherwise I'd play him over Khawaja. Also think our attack was pretty pedestrian on that last day, so Pattinson in for Siddle.

          Warner
          Harris
          Labuschagne
          Smith
          Head
          Wade
          Paine
          Cummins
          Pattinson
          Hazlewood
          Lyon

As a side note, did anyone think Paine's captaincy on that last day was really poor? I thought it was odd starting with Lyon to Buttler and Stokes and then he massively over bowled the spinner (that wasn't an actual day 5 pitch), I thought Siddle should have been given the ball earlier than he was and our fields were way too defensive in that first hour. If we were going to win, we needed two wickets in the first Hour, Paine let that first early session just meander along.

I like your team and would go the same.

Maybe Paine gave up and thought it is going to be a draw and didn't think things out.

How do you justify dropping Khawaja and retaining Warner? Khawja has at least threatened to make some runs and had some starts. His best test figures have come from opening so there's no reason he can't move up a spot, he's coming in early when Warner is dismissed anyway.

Based on not wanting a completely new opening pair (addmitedly it's a raffle anyway) and Labuschagne being tough to leave out after a fantastic knock.

Warner does have form behind him through the World Cup and has an outstanding test record (even if not in the UK). I'm struggling to drop a guy with 6000 test match runs at 47 based on four bad knocks.

Warner does only average 30 in the UK... But Khawaja averages 20.

Our top 3 are a raffle, but thankfully so far so have England's top three.....

Australia confirm that Smith is OUT of the Headingly Test - https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_...eadingley-test

I think this will be the only change to the batting line up.

Bit harsh there on Burns - with scores of 133, 53, 29 and 11 he is the only one of the top 3 in each side who has looked likely.

As for our openers it is difficult. Yes Warner is struggling but the mere fact that he is a proven run scorer will probably keep him in the line up. I would also like to see Khawaja open but think the top 3 will remain unchanged.

Burns has to be the luckiest batsman I have ever seen. We have failed to review LBW decisions that would have been out 3 times in 2 tests from memory. Dropped him multiple times and has played and missed or nicked safely too many times to count. He certainly does appear to have a fair amount of grit and determination to occupy the crease, but his talent is lacking.

Surprised they'd make three changes with Smith also out.

They're the same changes I'd have made to the side - think momentum swung on that last day at Lord's back to England and we needed to bring in some fresh recruits. Good moves.

Harris for Bancroft is a no brainer. The other might be rotation.
