Re: Break away European Super League.

Europe's football website, UEFA.com, is the official site of UEFA, the Union of European Football Associations, and the governing body of football in Europe. UEFA organises some of the most famous and prestigious football competitions on the European continent including the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA European Football Championship (UEFA EURO 2012, UEFA EURO 2016 etc.). The website features live video streaming of many UEFA competitions together with an extensive video archive and mobile service. In addition, there is coverage of the 54 national association domestic leagues, the route to UEFA's club competitions.

Statement by UEFA, the English Football Association, the Premier League, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), LaLiga, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and Lega Serie A
    Sunday 18 April 2021

UEFA, the English Football Association and the Premier League, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and LaLiga, and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and Lega Serie A have learned that a few English, Spanish and Italian clubs may be planning to announce their creation of a closed, so-called Super League.

If this were to happen, we wish to reiterate that we – UEFA, the English FA, RFEF, FIGC, the Premier League, LaLiga, Lega Serie A, but also FIFA and all our member associations – will remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project, a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever.

We will consider all measures available to us, at all levels, both judicial and sporting in order to prevent this happening. Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit; it cannot be any other way.

As previously announced by FIFA and the six Confederations, the clubs concerned will be banned from playing in any other competition at domestic, European or world level, and their players could be denied the opportunity to represent their national teams.

We thank those clubs in other countries, especially the French and German clubs, who have refused to sign up to this. We call on all lovers of football, supporters and politicians, to join us in fighting against such a project if it were to be announced. This persistent self-interest of a few has been going on for too long. Enough is enough.

Well this is the thing about super wealthy clubs, they'll treat everything poorly and out of self-interest but will be mollycoddled at every opportunity after the fact.

These statements are so strong I'm very concerned with how far down the track this is.
There's genuine angst in these paragraphs.

Didn't Arsenal sack like 55 employees about 6 months ago, presumably when they were already is discussions about this and the $1.35 Billion they would get for signing up?

Very good point and something I had completely forgotten about. Bloody disgraceful.

Here's a bit of commentary on how they got to this point - and seems the powers that be underestimated the seriousness or immediacy of the issue:

Analysis: 12 clubs have announced they are joining the new European Super League after a weekend of frantic talks. Why?

One source said that Ceferin thought that Agnelli was going to stand with him and condemn the proposals but “he just stopped talking to him on Sunday”.

Re: Break away European Super League.

Gary Neville has it right, strip the 6 EPL clubs of their points now and deduct points for next season.
Do them no favours with the draw next season.
Perhaps reach out to the Scottish PL and see if Rangers and Celtic would like to join the competition in a couple of seasons time.

They should really go hard at them.

Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal should be in the championship next season with a 20 point deficit.
Man City, United and Chelsea start the next season in the EPL with a 20 point deficit.

It could be the making of the EPL if they get this right.

Not if you can get investment in. Like the Saudis wanted to with Newcastle. Bet the PL green light that now!
The players will follow the money.

I'm not so sure, Despite money and greed being the prime motivator for the clubs and many others would some players reconsider their position in going to them if they suspect Arsenal, Totty and Liverpool would be in the championship for 2 years?
We've seen the way some players react when they don't like the coach, what will motivate them playing against other EPL sides when there is a fair chance they will finish mid table.

Given this has been talked about for years there will be some sponsorship clause that limits what the EPL can do but they should go their hardest if there is any scope to do so.

European Super League: Chelsea, Spurs, Manchester United, Arsenal Supporters' Trusts Slam Breakaway Plans
Sunday's announcement regarding a new European Super League has been met with strong condemnation

The Supporters' Trusts of Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal slammed the announcement of a breakaway competition to rival UEFA's Champions League, the European Super League (ESL). (More Football News)

Chelsea, Tottenham, United and Arsenal are among the 12 teams confirmed to form the new Super League, which also includes Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester City, as well as LaLiga trio Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Serie A's Juventus, Inter and Milan.

Despite significant opposition from UEFA, the respective leagues and the UK Government, and widespread condemnation, the ESL's plans were confirmed on Sunday.

It has been met with strong criticism, with Chelsea Supporters' Trust releasing a damning statement in response.

"They say expect the unexpected, but today the Chelsea Supporters' Trust [CST], our members and football supporters across the world have experienced the ultimate betrayal," the statement read.

"This is a decision of greed to line the pockets of those at the top and it has been made with no consideration for the loyal supporters, our history, our future of the future of football in this country.

"It is likely that this proposal with never come into existence, however, it speaks volumes that [Chelsea] are prepared to risk our existence in the Premier League and the FA Cup.

"The CST has held extensive talks with CFC over the past few weeks regarding various issues and there has been no mention of his secretive proposal. The CST and its members demand answers. This is unforgiveable. Enough is enough."

Arsenal Supporters' Trust tweeted: "The death of Arsenal as a sporting institution."

Tottenham Supporters' Trust issued a powerful statement, saying: "Tottenham Hotspur was the first British club to win a European trophy. We blazed a trail that caught the imagination of fans everywhere. Yesterday, the current Board of THFC betrayed the club, its history and the magic that makes this game so special when they put their name to a statement announcing the formation of a breakaway European Super League.

"This statement, signed by self-appointed 'leading clubs', was put out late on a Sunday night. It was made not only after no consultation with supporters, but in the face of clearly stated opposition to key parts of the announcement.

"We have always tried to maintain a pragmatic position of engagement with the Board of THFC, even under the most trying of circumstances. But enough is enough. The current Board is prepared to risk the club's reputation and its future in the opportunistic pursuit of greed. One of England's most famous clubs could find itself expelled from English league competition. Its players could be banned from international competition. And yet the current owners – mere custodians of a 139-year-old institution – are prepared to risk it all for avarice and self-aggrandisement.

"We demand the Board immediately disassociates itself from the breakaway league. Only then can meaningful discussions about change take place. If the Board does not do this, we will have no choice but to call on new owners prepared to safeguard the past, present and future of our great club to step forward and work with us."

Manchester United Supporters' Trust added: "A 'Super League' based on a closed shop of self-selected wealthy clubs goes against everything football, and Manchester United, should stand for.

"To bring forward these proposals without any fan consultation, and in the midst of a global pandemic when people should be pulling together not serving their own selfish interests, just adds insult to injury."
"Footscray people are incredible people; so humble. I'm just so happy - ecstatic"

There's a reason they've announced it suddenly without any consultation with the fans. I don't really understand the gravity of the situation because I don't follow the sport at all but it seems pretty dire.
