I don’t disagree necessarily, but I think the important difference there is that the US owners of Football teams aren’t directly involved in the US government, where this consortium has very direct links to the Saudi state. There’s no doubt that dubious actors have passed the Premier League’s ownership “test” before but this will be more controversial than most. Amnesty have already come out against it.Park that car

Qatar have controlling interests in BeIN, PSG and have been lambasted for their corruption in gaining the World Cup and their use of the labour market in building stadiums.
The PIF have clearly proven they aren’t controlled by the Saudi state enough to satisfy the owners and directors test and I don’t see it any differently from other powerful interests having controlling stakes in the league.
Personally I’d do away with private ownership, let’s face it when you see Man City players celebrating against Brentford you have to laugh to think they actually think they’ve won because they’re deserving and it’s a level playing field.BT COME BACK!

Look I hear you, and it’s a complex issue. Certainly many of these states have huge controlling interests in sport now. I do think there has been a smear campaign against this deal as a protective mechanism for the big 5 (nobody takes Tottenham seriously) and you don’t have to look much further than the super league to see where their intentions lie.

If there’s one thing you need to be good at these days to be a football fan, it’s mental gymnastics. I’ve been reading a bit about Newcastle’s impending takeover by a Saudi Arabian consortium who, according to assurances given to the Premier League, will not be merely a vehicle for the Saudi state. I'm actually conflicted here. I hate Ashley and I definitely hate oppressive shitheads......
But ultimately we're all hypocrites in our own ways and this is just another example of how I'll end up considering myself as one.TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.Comment

Re: EPL 2021-2022 Season
Hmmmm, whether the numbers are OK or whether they're not, I'm not ready to gloat.
As a humble Magpie (if I can say that on this board), all I want is some positivity at the transfer table and on the pitch. I don't want gimmicks, I just want people to come to the club and actually believe there is a future for them, that may not be mediocrity at best.
You may have picked up over time that I am pretty passionate about the Bulldogs, however, I have never written into the club to tell them of my objections to management and direction. Thirteen or fourteen years ago I actually did that with Newcastle, as someone who jumped on in 1994. At that stage I was only a 13-14 year supporter of the club, I was so incensed because they always talk about how the local fans are suffering without any regard for those abroad who if they had their shit together could have made them more powerful than they were at the time.
As such, I hope we have the resources to expand, and at least have some *!*!*!*!ing hope of being something befitting our stature as owners of the north. The owners of Chelsea, Man C. or whomever have their issues, we now have ours. I hope people can get over the brown shadow and see that Oligarchs are Oligarchs, no matter race religion or creed. If we're going to support and follow a competition that is no holds barred, then this is what it is and we just have to accept it.TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.Comment

Re: EPL 2021-2022 Season
Agree with all that J.
As long as they invest in the team (facilities, academy, coaching, youth program) and the community I'll be a happy adopted Geordie.
Would I prefer it wasn't the Saudis? Sure.
Would I set a salary cap? Definitely.
Is it annoying asking yourself questions and answering them? Undoubtedly.
For now I'm going to gloat just a little.
Especially to Aston Villa fans.
