I imagine we'll be unchanged for the first Test in New Zealand because I'm not sure who you tip out? Maybe Carey but that doesn't feel like .
Surely Marnus? spot has to be questioned. One recent century. Averaging something like 34 over the last 12 months. Just not good enough. Problem is whom do you replace him with? Won?t happen but I would like to see Smith at 3 with Bancroft opening. Not convinced about Green.

It'd be justified but I can't see the selectors dropping a guy who's averaging 51 from 48 tests. We're in an interesting place with Marnus, I've maintained that his record has been inflated by some incredibly rare good fortune and inflated scores against poor sides at home.

It kind of reminds me of the Mike Hussey situation - he was averaging 80 from his first 21 tests but averaged 30 for the next 30 tests and his career averaged dropped to 49. He was never dropped because of how strong his career record had been to that point and he'd established himself as a fairly key pillar of the batting line-up. I think he definitely plays in New Zealand and with India out here next summer, it's a hard time to make such a big structural shift.

Re: Australia v West Indies Summer 2024 - Test, ODI and T20

Here is how some batsman performed in the two series at Home

        Steve Smith
        31 45
        26 50
        38 4*
        12 11*
        6 91*

        Batted 10 times, 2 scores over 50. 3 x 2nd inning not outs
Got enough starts but couldn't go on with them.

        Marnus Labuschagne
        16 2
        63 4
        60 62*
        10 1*
        3 5
3 scores over 60, no scores over 65. One decent score in a 2nd innings, the rest of them failures
Getting out at critical times including last overs before a break or straight after a new batsman has just arrived at the crease.

        Usman Khawaja
        41 90
        42 0
        47 0
        45 9*
        75 10

Only 2 scores over 50 but for an opener he was rock solid. Only one decent score in the 2nd innings

        Travis Head
        40 14
        17 0
        10 DNB
        119 DNB
        0 0

One score over 50 which was a terrific century, A king pair in the final test against the WI

        Mitch Marsh
        90 63*
        41 96
        54 DNB
        5 DNB
        21 10
4 scores over 50, no centuries. Performed well

        David Warner
        164 0
        38 6
        34 57

        Alex Carey
        34 DNB
        4 53
        38 DNB
        15 DNB
        65 2
        3 x DNB, 2 scores over 50, solid performance

I’m not sure Warner is relevant anymore he has retired and didn’t play the last two tests .
Forget him he isn’t in the picture anymore.
His last series was only because the ACB wanted to give him a last hurrah.

Re: Australia v West Indies Summer 2024 - Test, ODI and T20

To hear Smith has proved he should be opening after this series is ignoring the fact the middle order collapsed without him being there.
              Robbed Peter to pay Paul.
Two players opening in their mid to late 30s is not good. Should have bought in a young one to open so they could learn a bit off Kawaja and leave Smith to show the middle order his experience.
Now they will have to find two inexperienced openers to bat together, because these two will retire soon.
To me it’s a quick fix but not thought of the future .
Greens last innings was horrible, he was extremely lucky and didn’t look like he had any idea at this level against a load of debutantes.
No shield cricket and BB going stops any chance of any player getting a chance to get in the side.
I think Australia is in for a hard fall within the next year or two.

He's certainly relevant to the question that was posed and just 2 batsman making centuries is a good indication of our struggles..
NZ next and hopefully as few of the boys can step up.

Not a bad first ODI spell from Xavier Bartlett - 3/10 from 6 overs.

Good cricketer, isn't he? Reminds me a lot of Ben Hilfenhaus.

I thought we saw some of why Lance Morris isn't quite there yet either. He's quick without being a Brett Lee and he can give too much width outside off-stump.

                      Morris was very disappointing

Windies all out for 231. Bartlett had a great debut.

Does Head opening make much sense next to Inglis when you have Green, Smith and Marnus in the middle order? It feels a bit one-paced for me. I'd probably swap Smith and Head as a start, but Short is more comfortable up the order and I think McGurk has potential as a middle order hitter, so you'd like to see him get a debut.

The 3, 4 and 5 that played last night just lacks some acceleration on paper. Green hasn't found that gear at international level yet.

What was the original batting line up Friday? Was Labuschagne pushed down the order prior to the game to give Green some exposure or was that a decision made on the day?

I read an article that Smith has wanted to bat three in the one day side, and I think I like that. And I'm not sure about Labuschagne generally. The complexion of the order changes drastically with Maxwell and Marsh back in the side.
                            TF is this?.........Obviously you're not a golfer.
