You are of the view that it hit Katich outide the off stump. If that in fact was the case (I don't think it was) then if he played a shot he would be safe but if he didn't play a shot he will be out PROVIDING the ball was going to hit the stumps.

On the surface it would appear that judging LBW's on TV is a fairly simple matter. But I am of the view that the TV offers a poor view of things because you are watching it with a one dimensional view - you are unable to see it as a three dimensional view. Therefore you cannot assess depth.

This severely restricts the viewer's assesment of where the ball was going. Judging height on TV is hopeless and that thingy that says this is what would have happened is mostly absolute bull$hit

Fair point about judging LBWs on TV. Then again you must remember that I was a master at judging LBWs from cover and square leg! I was much better at it than any of the umpires I played under.

I remember an umpire saying to me in juniors "and you can keep your opinions to yourself-you cant possible tell from where you're fielding"
They say Burt Lancaster has one, but I don't believe them.

I'm not an expert but he hit him in line, low(shoes) and on the crease then the ball is going no where else but the stumps.
I agree. I, like Tony Greig, thought he'd been bowled. If his legs weren't there those stumps were flying.

Yeah, square leg's a pretty handy spot.

I've actually seen blokes at Fine Leg having a shout

I always like the response, "You must be joking" after turning one down. Especially when it came from square leg or gully or similar.

Reminds me of one of the AFL umpire's last season after a decision. A player yells, "You must be joking" and he responds, "Nah, I'm deadly serious"

          It was Brian Lake IIRC.

It's when you are at first slip and your appeal gets turned down that starts to make you think you're seeing things.

I thought we were talking about the Mitchell Johnson dismissal?

My first impressions was that Johnson was unlucky, the ball to me was sliding down leg [might have clipped leg], and on replay, i have the same opinion, i would have given him not out.

I would agree if he was just a kid doing okay, but the fact of the matter is he is one of the premier batsman in the Shield comp. He's the 3rd-leading run scorer in the Shield, and he is already playing for Australia A. There isn't too much else he can do to suggest he is ready for the big time.

Nice bit of bowling for Krezja with the dismissal of Amla.

Who would have thought that a spinner would hold the key for a test match at the WACA.... The people in WA responsible for serving up this track should be hung out to dry.

Somehow I doubt Mitch Johnson shares that sentiment

Those late wickets will break the spirit of the Proteas and if we can take a 100 plus run lead into the 2nd innings and bat well in our first session we can shut them out of the game.

Krejza started well but went for too many runs and Siddle didn't look overly threatening.

Just out of curiosity who would be the next pace bowler in the pecking order?

I think he would be very much alone, and he was gifted atleast 3 or 4 wickets too.

Today's wicket played like a 4th day wicket not a 2nd day wicket. Now I don't know if the weather has played a part in the prepartion, but this wicket just doesn't have enough juice in it for my liking.

                            Maybe Hilfenhaus or Bracken??

The other options would probably be Bollinger & Noffke, but Bollinger is just returning from injury and Noffke is presently injured.

The stocks do look to be pretty low at present.

Agree with your thoughts on Krejza, but I thought Siddle bowled well on a wicket which gave him little or no assistance.

Regarding the quicks, the cupboard is pretty bare. I didn't mind Siddle's effort but he just doesn't bowl enough good balls. He kept it tight and bowled OK but it just didn't click for him today.
I wonder if Nannes would be in the mix? I suppose being a left hander would work against him.

Not alot of pace bowlers putting up their hand. Maybe Hilfenhaus then Bracken?
At the start of the year I thought Bollinger, Hilfenhaus and Noffke. As a bolter Brett Geeves?
None are in ripping form right now though.
